2012 F1 Circuit of the Americas Race

Post by dradernh » Mon Nov 19, 2012 6:18 pm

Anyone catch this race on Sunday? Just because it was held in the States, I decided to tune in for a change. The racing was decent, as was the coverage, and there's nothing quite like the sound of bazillion-RPM sewing machines being rowed via sequential gearboxes. The moveable wings are pretty cool, too, although I don't think I ever picked up 12 MPH when mine went flat. Best of all, I thought, was the track & the facility - it's enough to make a guy think of moving to Austin, assuming it will be open to club events. That track is the real deal.

Fantastic debut. Might have to be added to the racing bucket list- at least as an attendee.

^^ what he said ^^

I thought the circuit was spectacular as was the racing. I would've loved to see the support races. Let's just hope attendance stays up for the next few years. I went to Indy for the first 2 years of F1. Each year attendance dropped substantially. IMO the indy "road course" was a terrible idea / layout.

Nahhh, it's a mere 33 driving hours from my vantage point ...
if we add along some tracks along the way during summer vacation we can make something interesting.
Alternate would be to contract specialized haulers during winter, take our machines there and have a blast for 2 ++ days :P

I watched the "quali's" and the race this weekend. I have not paid much attention to F1 mostly because it has been tough to see the coverage. This year I finally managed to get my DVR to record all the races so I could watch. While the racing is very different I really enjoy watching these cars and drivers. I also picked up the video game F1 2012. It's awesome to drive each track yourself before each race.

I am down in Austin 3-4 times a year and have been checking out the track progress for the last couple years. While my efforts to get in for a closer look last year failed I did snap a few pictures. It is amazing what they accomplished from last December to get this track ready:

It looks like a pretty decent track, though there are others between here and there that I'd rather drive first that I haven't driven yet. I'll have a better idea of the facilities and track when I go there in 3 weeks, but it looks a lot better than most of the other Tilke tracks, and has a lot of variety of corners.

I have watched every session of qualifying and race this year thanks to the DVR. I have become a huge F1 fan this year. Great racing and lots of different winners. It is so nice to see pure racing unlike NASCAR with all those yellows at the end to have a crash bang finish. In the Austin race Hamilton and Vettel finished 20 something seconds ahead of third place.

www.darmeth.com - All the races, practice and qualifying from BBC or Sky Sport are posted there. You have to sign up to view the forum and download the video. The race is usually avail to download 4-5 hours after regular broadcast. The British coverage is far better than the US coverage and there are no commercials.

I use Vuze to download the torrents and then convert them to play on iTunes/Apple TV.

Ya, then you will see carnage that puts NASCAR to shame.
