Newb Here

Post by Massscene » Sun Sep 30, 2012 12:33 am

I just made my first post in another thread, and then realized I haven't even introduced my self.

I'm Rich. I have always been interested in trying road racing/time attack. I built street/strip Honduh's for about 4 years, but got sick of the same old same old. Not enough seat time being the main reason.

I recently got a job with a shop who's owners are particularly involved with COM and racing in general, and they immediately lit a fire under my butt (probably unknowingly) I will be attending this last event at NHMS in a couple weeks, to give it a shot.

It seems funny to me to be going racing with a stock base model Honda Civic (70hp..... 150k ago.) but hey, you've got to start somewhere!

I look forward to seeing you guys out at the track!

Rich

Hey Rich, Welcome to the club. There are quite a few cars like yours so you will be in good company. If you enjoyed the other forms of racing you will love getting 20-25 minutes of track time. If you have questions about anything, fire away, someone will have the answer.

Thanks! I noticed your classed in ST4. I am fairly certain my car will be in there as well. My car is entirely stock in terms of power, but has rims and suspension. Hopefully I can add a set of track brake pads and steel lines, by the event.

Welcome Rich.

Yes you should be in ST4 (since there is no ST5 :) as a result of the suspension and wheel upgrades. You'll have a lot of fun and for the first time out I doubt you will miss the horsepower as you'll have your hands full trying to maximize the braking and cornering grip, and that's where most of the lap time comes from anyway.

Street pads are acceptable provided they aren't bargain basement pads and have plenty of meat on them, although track pads feel much nicer and handle the elevated brake temperatures a lot better. The brake hose replacement is a really good idea especially if your car is a few years old, the rubber does deteriorate over time. I've blown a brake hose twice now on the street on older road only vehicles, definitely not something I would want happening at 100 mph!

Also make sure your cooling system is up to snuff. You will be pushing that sewing machine hard for 20 minutes at a tile and it would be a shame to lose time due to overheating.

As long as the thermostat doesn't get stuck or have antique hoses I'm sure the cooling system should be fine, average high for that time of year is only 61.5F so you can always crank the heater core to help out :)

I'll definitely do a once over pretty thoroughly. I'll most likely change the oil the night before. If I can get the lines done, ill do a brake fluid flush too.

Welcome Rich!

There are and have been plenty of 4-banger Hondas that run with COM, including many Civics. Amazing how quick they can be with skilled hands at the wheel. :)

As a newbie, it is your responsibility to make sure the weather is perfect at this event. No pressure!

Cheers,

Rich, welcome to the club...and make sure you bring a spoon for all that humble pie you'll be eating as you stare at the GTI's rear bumper and ridiculous muffler all day.

Guess where he works?
