Car Classification Question
Ok, so I signed up and paid for the July 3rd track day @ NHIS as a student. I was planning on driving my 1993 Corrado that day, the only thing is I dont know if my car has to meet the requriements like and ST or whatever. The thing is the car has a lot of high end mods
1993 Corrado VR6 2.8L V6
Coilovers
Wilwood BBK
Upgraded MK4 Rear Brakes
Supercharger
LSD/3.94 R&P
4pt Schroth Harnesses
SS Exhaust
Any help would be great, thanks!

That sounds like a really cool setup, but I think you are in classification limbo. You are definitely in either SP or P. By definition for SP your car can have any motor with the same # of cylinders as originally offered by the manufacturer. If I recall, the Corrado was a 4cyl. supercharged. If this is correct than you could put a Cosworth 4cyl. motor in there and be legal- but the VR6 swap (if it is a swap) bumps you to PB I would think. If the 6 cyl. was offered as O.E. than you probably are in SPB if you swapped superchargers.
Regardless for day 1, the car classification is no big deal. Have fun !

Car class
A Supercharged VR6 motor would put you in PA.
You will need, at a minimum:
5-point harnesses for both driver and passenger
Roll bar
Driver's suit
SA helmet
and all the other safety mods that are required in the Prepared classes. As there was no supercharger available on the VR6 engines, that bumps you to PA.

youve got ages....all you need is a roll bar and matching harnesses on both the driver and passenger seats. I personally would go for a full cage but thats just me, I may be wrong but I believe all you need to get on the track is a roll bar (rear hoop and stays with harness mounts). You can probably find and fit a bolt in for the corrado in timeDeckManDubs wrote:PA huh, so I guess I wont be able to use the car on the track for this type of event without all the safty features. So P/A is like GT1, so I would need a cage, 5pts, fire suit, fire suppresant system, window netting?
Go on you know you want to (plus I want to see a supercharged V6 corrado on the track )

I'm probably opening a can of worms here... but I've heard it a few times now from different people. It seems to be a major gripe with some folks that in order to drive with our club on the school day (NOT in the time trial), they still have to fall within one of our classes. And in many cases, mods such as this throw you into a prepared class requiring a rollbar, fire suit, etc... What if somebody just wants to attend the school day, and has no desire to do the time trial? Because they've done an engine swap, or added a big brake kit, they also need to add a roll cage and buy a fire suit???
I'm all for safety, and I personally will never drive a car on track again without a full cage (no matter how slow I may be going!). But I think there should be some provision for newbies that want to drive their modded car at the driver's school without having to adhere to all class rules. And I know there's an argument for "They modded the car to make it faster, they'll have to make it safer for the new speeds they'll be seeing" - or something like that. But I guarantee most of our bone-stock STi's will be MUCH faster than a supercharged '93 Corrado.
So, for the driver's school ONLY - If the instructor would be comfortable riding in the car, then I say to hell with making it fit class rules. But that's just me.
Cheers,
Jason

Car Class Rules
Greetings -
The short answer for car classifications/safety requirements is that we are an organiztion that operates in the context of time trial competition, and as such, need specific rules so that the playing field is level, available for all to understand, and provides for the safety of all members. All bodys(professional & amateur) that sanction compeitive motor sports events have specific rules packages.
There are other organizations that put on HPDEs that could be considered such as SCDA, and clubs like BMW, Audi, etc for those not wanting to run under the COM rule set.
Best,
Don

Let's refer to the COM Rule Book and put this dog to rest.
VW Corrado SLC
Stock Class is SSA
ST Class is ST2
SP Class is SPB
<snip from 2006 Rules>
STREET PREPARED B (SPB)
Generally all 5 and 6 cylinder normally aspirated and 4 cylinder turbo cars prepared to Street Prepared rules.
(goes to SPC with other 4-cyl) Mazda 13B normally aspirated
(goes to SPC with other 4-cyl)
</snip>
BUT then there is the snail on the side of the motor...
<snip from 2006 Rules>
12. Turbo charged and super charged cars will be moved up one class.
</snip>
Which means...
STREET PREPARED A (SPA)
Generally all cars with 8 or more cylinders or 6 cylinder turbo cars prepared to Street Prepared rules.
Mazda rotary turbos
Porsche 944 turbo
Page 19 of the rules book has all the relevant info for what you'll need as an SPA competitor. With the whopping 240ish? whp that car must make, don't sweat being at the back of the SPA pack. Just enjoy the seat time.
