So last year the highways were flooded around Binghamton so we ended up taking I88 to Rt. 206 to Rt 76 through Ithaca to get there. This was clearly the most direct route but was quite hilly and not all highway. On the way back we took Rt. 14 north and then I90 all the way back. This seemed the easiest route but was a bit longer. So what route do most people take to get there?
I88-I86-Rt14 North (I have not been this way yet)
I90-Rt14 South

Like you said, 90 to 14. AKA the 'northern route', which is the pike through Schenectady, Utica, and Syracuse. Then 14 south through Geneva/Lyons Falls, driving down the WESTERN edge of Lake Seneca. A bit longer but an easier tow/ride, with plenty of service stations along the way.
