NHMS 3 pics and vids
NHMS 3 pics and vids
Awesome event, sunny and about 85 as usual at NHMS, slippery but always welcome over rain. Did anybody else thing the track slowed down for the time trial compared to the morning sessions? I assume most would agree but justy curious. Anybody have any vids or pics to share? I uploaded my trial session to youtube but want to overlay the GPS data with the video. Anybody with an AIM solo know how to do that?

Re: NHMS 3 pics and vids
My fastest lap of the 2 days was the 3rd lap of the time trials. Note: I did not say it was a fast lap

I was faster the first day but on the second day my fastest time was during the time trial.

Re: NHMS 3 pics and vids
Discussed with some on this and 2nd day seemed slower that 1st day and TT time more slippery. When asked whether it was due to fuilds being dumped by failing cars of just overall heat and track conditions, the latter seemed to be the case.
Prevented me from getting track record in my class ... (not trying to be Alain Prost, always blaming the car ..) ... also followed Nick F. suggestion that I should do turn 1 in 2nd gear to make sure I didnt slide into the wall ... joking of course since he has the record (still)
Must say this is a great club, like an extended family ...

Very nice driving Andre! Are those 4.30 gears? I am jealous.
I found the track to be 0.5-1 second slower after lunch on Sunday.
Here is a practice lap video from Saturday of me chasing Jason in the pink Dwarf. Running at 1:20-1:22 pace here.

In RaceStudio export the selected laps as a CSV file. Buy RaceRenderer for $25-$35 and select the video and CSV file. For the TT it is easy, use the sync tool and line up the data with the video when the car starts moving. Most of us select to invert the G display as it seems more natural for some unknown reason. Play around, there are a lot of options! Suggest just selecting a 30 second output file until you get the results looking the way you want then process the whole video.savage217 wrote:Awesome event, sunny and about 85 as usual at NHMS, slippery but always welcome over rain. If you need to time stretch the data to keep it in sync through the video then see this:

I had a great time as well! Plus no hot lap riders puked in my car......though one got close. I think I'm starting to sense it.

Andre, great driving. That was me in the e36 M3 during open track. You were the fastest Miata out there, that I remember.
Here is my Time trial video. I was a little dissapointed in myself to be honest. I was in the zone waiting in the pits, felt great, had the AC on and then I started seeing my water gauge climbing a bit past 220. I immediately shut it off and put the heat on but the temp sort of just stayed there and I was about to be sent out. My outlap I was basically just staring at the gauge and I really think it threw me off mentally during the time trial. I feel like I braked a little too early and hard during the oval and made a few other mistakes. I'm not one for excuses but that kind of stuff pisses me off. Oh well, Watkins Glen is all that matters to me anyways. Cannot wait for that event. I was up late last night, determined to figure this data overlay thing out. I thing I figured it out except the G force meter and the track. Who cares about those anyway?

Suggestions for Nick:
Turn in later (stay on throttle longer) for NASCAR T1 and hold that outside line longer before going for your T2 apex.
Turn in earlier for T3, trying to brush the early apex/wall/jersey barrier; don't pinch the car into the later "hill apex" on the inside curbing. Let the car carry more speed around the outside of the corner. Take the "Miata line" and you'll carry more speed up the hill with a wider radius.
Use all of the (off-camber) track at the exit of the Bowl (again, a "don't pinch the corner" philosophy).

Put the right-side tires over the white line? If so, pros & cons?CP wrote:Suggestions for Nick:

With a car similar to Nick's, I stay left of that line as I'm flat there & the transition upsets the car to no apparent advantage - other than the excitement! With lateral g / steering angle right at 1.00 / 45° and increasing through T7 apex, it can be hard enough staying hooked-up without adding in the transitions introduced by going over the line. Not sure if Nick's situation is the same, as his suspension looks more compliant in the video, so the wider arc might be a plus.
Anyone else go over the white line at track-out of T6?

Greater exit speed up the hill as a result of a larger radius to the corner = basics (were you being sarcastic?). You won't spin the car in circles if you cross the white line

No, not sarcastic. See further comments added after your swift reply.CP wrote:Greater exit speed up the hill as a result of a larger radius to the corner = basics (were you being sarcastic?). You won't spin the car in circles if you cross the white line
You take my car up that hill over the white line at its normal exit speed & you will spin the car in circles. I speak as an expert in doing just that with my car; it positively loves spinning in circles - half circles, too!
As said, not sure Nick's car would behave the same way, so that may be a way for him to pick up a few MPH there.

Re: NHMS 3 pics and vids
Not this time fortunately, though one person got close. There is usually some healthy communication in the car while we are on the roll, then quite suddenly, things get quiet.....and usually coming out of 6.Bobc wrote:Did I miss something Did some one puke in your car??????? that would suck!!!! At the July NHMS a hot lap passenger puked in the car. I felt really bad about it. I should have noticed when he stopped talking.
Joe Lu told me he keeps barf bags in the car for these occasions. He obviously has experience with this as well.
