Pantera

Post by Neonacr » Thu Aug 16, 2012 1:40 pm

Anyone know of a resource that could give me an idea what a Detomaso Pantera would be worth? A friend stumbled upon one stored in a garage for the last 30 years. I expect to look at it in the next few days, owner is ready to sell. I expect it to be seized and full of rodents but the owner doesn't want much for it. I can find values for running cars but not something like this. Also the owner claims this car special as it has some version of a Shelby engine, can find no internet reference to Shelby equiped Panteras. I have the garage, tools and experience to do a full resto so labor is no issue, but I don't want to start out behind the curve.

in my 2012 rare and exotic estimating guide RUNNING pour shape is 15K to excellent shape at 48K .
you will find people trying to sell them in the 70 to 80 K range but they don't sell for that . the average action selling price is about 35 to 40 K .
thoughs cars like the lamborghini miura's were total hell at speed . the aerodynamics are so bad the nose of the cars lift at about 100 MPH . the chin spoiler help but was not a total fix .
in my shop i have restored two of them over the years and they are very low quality built cars . you will find many things that will make you say to your self what the hell were they thinking to do it this way ! and thats from me that works on a shit load of ferrari's , lambo's and cars like that .

if it starts and runs 5K may not be to bad 2 to 3 K if it does not run . the thing is many people think thoughs cars are worth some thing and there just not . they were junk when they were new and over time they got no better . they are a good looking car i think so any way if your doing shows and just cruise nights there ok but in no way are they a race car .

As said, there is a small market for Panteras, bu they are enthusiastic. If you are looking for a good track car, it's not. But for 5K or under, might be worth it, even if you just clean it up and flip it. Don't worry much about the engine, it's a basic 351 Cleveland. The "shelby" engine is probably cast alum valve covers that say "shelby" - a pretty common over the counter part at the Ford/Mercury dealer.

If it's non-rusty and original, it's worth a look. If it's rusted out, still worth a couple bucks as a parts car.

Also reminder that those Panteras were know to have poor brake system... But who needs brakes on a track eh?
