Glad to see the copilot was wearing a full face helmet (and HANS). That's not always the case.
Maybe it's a requirement for Pikes Peak.

FWIW, the upside to crashes like the one at PP is that hard data & experience are acquired. Hopefully, that information is disseminated widely if it isn't already well-known.

Some nice MotoGP footage from 2011
Re: Funny motorsport videos... ?
Those guys are on the HAIRY edge, incredible footage. I really like from 1:27-1:42 when they are all coming over the rise of the hill. And I get nervous when my car slides a little, what a wuss.

I watch MotoGP every chance I get. I raced bikes when I was a kid, and blasting around in a car doesn't even come close; I'd still be on one if falling off wasn't going to be the end of it. At least punching a car in results in little more than a short walk & a long invoice.PaddyMcP wrote:Some nice MotoGP footage from 2011
Couple memories came up watching that: Cal Rayborn being the first to drift a RR bike, doing it on the high banking at Daytona(!) back in, what, '71 or so? It's really not possible to describe how lousy tires were back then; I'd guess the majority of improvement in bike times since the 60s comes from tires alone.
The other was Dave Aldana getting off on the straight at Talladega at 170+ while testing tires. Cycle World had a series of snaps of him going down the track without the bike. IIRC, his injuries were nothing to get excited about.
And, of course, Kenny Roberts rewriting the rules for RR by taking a very sharp intellect & his well-developed dirt riding skills to Europe and doing the supposedly impossible a la Phil Hill & Mario Andretti. He was so good, and with a committed manufacturer in Yamaha behind him, he was able to do it year after year. Kenny's description of how to take a particular turn was so counterintuitive to me that I had to read it many times just to begin to get what he was talking about. I'm certain he hadn't studied it, but the man had physics down cold.

Here's Stoner being filmed in a drift at 1000 FPS.

No more whining about apexes! To think he actually gets pavement contact with his elbow. If you watch carefully you can see his bike squate under power just a length past the apex.
Watching Kenny Roberts and those guys at the old Bryar races was amazing. I used to like to stand just past the crest of the hill, for the first couple of laps. Watching the good guys take the hill flat out and making the turn with the front wheel in the air was amazing. There would be a wonderful pause when you couldn't see any of the bikes on that first lap and then they would all just explode over the top of the hill right in front of you....
A couple of times they let me run my Formula Ford in open practice with the bikes. One day I was lapping and suddenly there was the smell of Castrol in the air. I pushed hard and found myself behind an F1 bike and got to watch up close for a couple of laps. They brake much, much earlier then a FF ( more then a hundred feet, at least in 1982 ), so a good deal of caution was involved. When I got in there was a lanky guy in a driver suit standing there and he looked at my with just a tiny touch of an Elvis sneer and said "You wouldn't have done that with me out there!". He was friendly about it but I don't think any F1 driver likes to see their machine gained on. It wasn't Freddie Spencer, but another american with a name starting with S, maybe Rich Schlachter...
He had a suitcase for a lunchbox with lots of compartments with different things in it. I stood there hoping he would feed me, but no luck. He could have just tossed things in my direction and watched my jump for them.

OH, the reason I could catch that bike was because a journalist was driving it for some magazine article...
