Local Amsoil Dealers?

Post by WillM » Wed Jun 27, 2012 11:03 pm

Are there any Amsoil dealers local to Eastern Mass?

I'm trying to get my hands on some gear oil. I can't believe that Amsoil is still using the antiquated Amway/Avon style of distribution!

Any local shops carry Amsoil? Any members deal it?

Thanks in advance,

Will

Will,

If you want Amsoil on a regular basis, you can sign up as a perfered customer to get their products at whole sale plus shipping. There is a link on their web site which gives instructions. They have a 6 month trail membership that is only a small fee. The prices are a lot cheaper and you don't have a minimum purchase requirement either.

The problem with Amsoil is that because of the Amway model it is mostly guys at home selling the stuff out of their basement. As such they usually don't stock anything.

You might get lucky, but it's going to take a lot of calling around.

Thanks everyone.

Y'all confirmed what I suspected, that the stuff just can't be bought off-the shelf. Kind of surprising, since I can run to the local AutoZone or Cap and pick up Redline and Lucas Oil products, and a few local performance/race shops have Motul on the shelf.

That said...anyone using or used Amsoil in gearboxes, transmissions, engines, or anything else?

A growing number of race shops & specialists I've spoken with have told me that Amsoil is all they use now.

Yes I use their 15w50 racing oil, their gear oil and also their tranny fluid. The stuff is not cheap but it works extremely well. After an event, the oil looks almost the same as before an event. And that is definatelty not true of most other oils that I have tried. It really holds up to heat and abuse well. On top of that, it has the highest protection for your engine than any other oil that I have seen. The only other oil that seems to come close is Redline. Mobil 1 is not even close.

BTW I have a few bottles 20-W-50 plus gear lube if you are interested. I will be a NHMS all 3 days (but don't look for a Red Alfa, rather a dark blue BMW 330i No. 25 SSB = classroom instructor).

I was looking for parts at these folks: http://www.behlingracing.com/index.php and ran across oil products from these folks:
http://www.joegibbsracingoil.com/traini ... guide.html

Their take on oil additives is interesting and they tailor oils for different racing applications. Different oils for different clearances and uses.

One interesting fact was they make "Hot Rod" oil which is a high quality oil with a lot of corrosion protection. It's the only motor oil available that passes military specs for corrosion. So it's great for cars that don't run daily or weekly. It sounds like the best thing to do for track cars before you put them away for the season. The military has huge corrosion problems on their fleet that stays parked.

The Behling racing site looks like it's for serious oval track guys. Wish road racers had places like that.

A couple of things that stood out for me in the Gib's info was that detergent attacks the zinc anti wear additives and that they gave 8 pages of graphs plotting viscosity for different mixtures of their synthetic oils. I've never seen that depth of information for other folks products and it makes me think they cater to the people that really need this stuff.

Thanks for the info everyone!

I ended up going directly to the source. Express shipping wasn't too bad, and the Preferred Customer discount helped.

For what it is worth, I've been running Joe Gibbs Racing Oil (XP3) for a few seasons, on the recommendation of my engine builder. I did a bunch of research at the time, and like Bruce, was impressed by the depth of information on JGR's site. At one point I laughed at Amsoil prices, but the JGR stuff I use makes Amsoil seem cheap!!

They sell the Gibbs stuff by the barrel too, and I would guess that's how the real folks buy it. A NASCAR cup car must use gallons a week. If you ran a couple of those cars you'd be buying barrels every few weeks. Maybe the price drops quickly.

This is Marcus! You can clearly see in the avatar that my car goes clockwise, like the old Bryar track. Bruce's car goes counter-clockwise - kids these days! There's no explaining... :D
