open trailer registration

Some I try to renew my trailer registration for this years use and the RMV saying that "Needs Insurance Stamp" meaning I need a RMV-3 form from my insurance company saying that I can attach to my truck policy. So I called my insurance company Geico to get that form.

Now, they got back to me saying that they cannot attach this trailer to my truck policy that has a regular PAN plate not commercial plate because they got into from RMV that my trailer gvwr is over 3000lbs. Their policy stating that anything over 3000lbs will not be able to attach to the vehicle's policy.

I'm very shocked that this happened as I had been using my trailer for many years now with no problem. The only thing that changed was that I was to be with Progressive insurance which they never give me a problem with that.

So my question is, the people that have trailers with regular plate not the commercial plates, how do you attach your trailer to your vehicle policy that has a gvwr of over 3000lbs? Is it just Geico's policy? How are you registering and insured your open 16' flat trailer?

in ma neither my trailer or my truck are commercially registered. my trailer is registered w 10k gross wt (which is correct). my insurance agent is local and knows the rules. the registry did not question anything. i thing you insurance company is incorrect.

I agree, I think you're insurance agent is wrong. I had no problem attaching my trailer to my Progressive policy. The only thing that was a pain was that each year, when I had to renew the registration, the RMV required a stamp. So I had to find a local Progressive office to get an insurance binder. Otherwise I had no issues.

I just switched back to Progressive insurance and I had no problem getting the needed paper work to register my trailer. Plus, the new policy is cheaper too.

Geico blows.

I thought about it but I have read that if your tow truck has a Mass plate and your trailer has Maine trailer plate, the cops will stop you and question you. I think they are cracking down in that.

M trailer reg occasionally comes through with "needs ins co stamp" , maybe evry 2nd or 3rd year. I just go to my agent and they stamp it, no form no fuss. It really shouldn't be a big deal for them. As far as plate type, that's bull, you could have a Smart car reg'd as commercial and a 1 ton dually reg'd with a passenger plate. Looks like you solved the problem by switching to a real ins co.

For some of you young bucks, and gals, GEICO dates back to the early 1960's (perhaps further?) and was about the only policy available to service personnel in Europe. Government Employees Insurance Corporation is where the initials came from. At one time the company was fined by the US Government for ripping off its customers. Sounds like they still are a bit suspect.

Some states have " two out of three" law. Among the state you're driving, your license and the plates two out of three have to be the same. Probably applies to trailer too.

None of my trailers have ever required a stamp. I renew them all online, from my 40x48" Harbor Freight Tire Trailer, to my 27' Enclosed.

You must have an active insurance policy for them then. In MA the stamp is required when your agent knows about it but it isn't in the DMV system since it isn't insured explicitly.
