Re: Rules proposals online
Am I reading this ruling right? The Ariel Atom is now being allowed to run in Showroom Stock

Re: Rules proposals online
If that's the case, I want that so-called Nissan 240 that ran at the Glen in PB to be slotted into SS as well.betelgeuse wrote:Am I reading this ruling right? The Ariel Atom is now being allowed to run in Showroom Stock

The Ariel Atom 2 and 3 starts "life" in Showroom Stock Unlimited (SSU) and would move to Street Touring GT (STGT) with modifications.
Re: Rules proposals online
It does not have the highest power to weight ratio in that class.

Re: Rules proposals online
Personally,I don't agree with the ruling. However,I can assure SSU competitors not to fear a stock Atom in their class

It's not what you drive, it's how you drive. "Lap times matter"

Re: Rules proposals online
Thats not the point. It's a kit car built for the sole purpose of running on the track. It doesn't come with a VIN and it doesn't pass any federal safety or emissions standards.nateh wrote:It does not have the highest power to weight ratio in that class.
From the AA web site;
" The Ariel Atom 3 is a unique and limited hand-built, high performance motor vehicle. All new Ariel Atom 3s sold within the North American market are partially or fully assembled in the USA by TMI AutoTech, Inc. (‘TMI’). Ariel Atom 3s are built and sold by TMI AutoTech, Inc. for the purposes of off-road/competition use (i.e., organized or private track day; slalom; Solo 1 events, etc.). Ariel Atom 3s are not considered to be federalized, production vehicles and do not necessarily meet applicable FMVSS criteria. Therefore, Ariel Atom 3s are not available with 17-digit VIN or PIN numbers....."
The first line of the COM rules for SS is; The Showroom Stock (SS) category is intended to provide competition for mass produced stock automobiles.
I would hardly call the AA mass produced.
I guess with this ruling you have to let all the kit cars in SS.
Big can of worms IMO.

I agree 100% with Greg's information. Makes no sense at all to let an Ariel atom into SSU. Should be in Prepared.

Re: Rules proposals online
Lumping "All Kit Cars" into any one group is actually a bad idea ( just think where I could stick the Cobra if I tossed the winsheild, wiper assy & front plate on the car ) ..... just as they have done, evaluate them on a case by case basis, make an edcuated guess as to it's best fit & see what happens, then make any adjustments the follwoing year .... not a bad plan ....
Classing by hp/weight w/ aero / mod penalities is basically what NASA does and from what I can tell it works out quite well ...... but, personally we ought to just stop classing cars as we do now and base the entire process ( including practice sessions ) on "lap time" history for each driver / car .... in this fashion no one driver can walk away from the group and win every event ( or run all over other drivers in practice sessions ) keeping things competative & iteresting for all ( basically you win tto much you move up a time class or weight get's added to keep things a bit more equal ) ....
And trust Mark, if he says the SSU cars have nothing to worry about from a stock AA, he is most likely right, considering he is the only one that ownes one in the club that I know of & it's never "stock" .....
