WANTED: 3/4 ton tow truck and 20ft enclosed trailer
WANTED: 3/4 ton tow truck and 20ft enclosed trailer
Hi,
This winter I am going to try and find the money to purchase a truck and trailer. If you have one or the other for sale please let me know.
If I can scrape up the money I was thinking of 3/4 ton GM 2500HD RWD, standard cab. 20x8.5 foot trailer.

Don't pass up a deal on a comparable Ford or Dodge,as they are every bit up to the task of towing (and then some.. ) Decide what you can really afford to spend..and then shop around. Newer with more miles is always better than low miles and rotted... When looking at trailers, you must look under them for..the evil rust. Again, mileage is not as important as overall condition. Finding one set up with shelves, cabinets etc is a plus. Right now,it is a buyers market. You may even find a truck and trailer combo for sale...I just saw one last week...you can usually score a great deal on a package!.

Damn, with this rig you sure could tour in style and comfort. Might have to sell a few things to get it though.

That's a long way from a 3/4 pickup and 20 footer. (I'd love a stacker... )

Sell the home, buy a lot, move the toter onto the lot when you're not on the road. What's not to like?

I put a deposit on a truck today. A 2006 GMC 2500HD RWD work truck (no power window). 8 foot bed, standard cab.
88k miles. pretty clean but not too clean (cheap enough).
There are a lot of things that I still don't now about it but I know enough to be sue that I am getting what I want.
This truck does not appear to need much but I may decide to replace the brake lines.
One thing that I am wondering, is why does it have two batteries? Is it for some type of aux power, for trailer or plow?

Diesels have two batteries, but I'm sure you would have mentioned it being a diesel.
I have seen aux. batteries installed on some plow applications and slide-in camper installs. It may even have been a GM option on gas motors.
Post pics when you can.

right. it is not a diesel. It was adventised as being a "tow machine".
Anyway, I will post pics when I can. Right now it is an hour from here. I am expecting to pick it up by the end of the week (and then I have to find a place to park it).

dual batteries are very common in full size chevys most are used to offset the Fisher electric plows. The other reason is if it has camper prep the truck will only kill 1 battery on the accessory power feed leaving 1 to start the truck.
You mentioned brake lines. there is avendor (Inline tube)they have stainless steel kits for these trucks I have done several and the price is worth not needing to do it again just at thought.

inline tube: I used their pre-bent stainless for both fuel and brake line on both my Desoto and my Buick. I was not aware that they made kits for modern cars. thanks for the tip.

Just trucks apparently - probably due to the fact that the lines rust out in 5 years instead of 10 due to the abuse they get.n1gzd wrote:inline tube: I used their pre-bent stainless for both fuel and brake line on both my Desoto and my Buick. "the lines rust out in 5 years instead of 10 due to the abuse they get." It's not abuse,it's GM saving pennies not painting or coating anything under their trucks since about 2000. I am shocked the amount of rotted items I am finding on many 4 or 5 year old vehicles; brake and fuel lines, oil pans, driveshafts, spring shackles, control arms,shocks,frames.. !! Ford is a little better, and Dodge actually does the best job for undercarriage corrosion protection...but they all need to do a better job protecting stuff out of sight! They should make a rust belt option when you buy a vehicle; more stainless items and undercoating!! Exhaust systems use to be the rot item..now it is brake and fuel lines...and many of them are difficult to replace, and have special end fittings. The Silverado runs 5 brake lines under the cab to an ABS module and then to the wheels; when one rots out,you have to replace them all...a lot of stuff in the way. Not like the good old days,I very rarely ever replaced steel brake lines on cars unless they were 15+ years old. Must be all that quality chinese steel they use today...
