the reason I asked was I just drove a dealer loaner Mazda 6 for a week. V6, 5 speed. loved fuel!! It was a little rocket and I drove the skirt off it but it had milege that rivaled my 5.3 V8 GMC. Nice car but I wouldn't buy one for a daily driver.(because of the fuel mileage) Plus the tranny was laid out kind of weird.

I don't know about that. My hand me down 2001 325xi has 194k on it with no issues. If you can't or won't fix it yourself it's a completely different story.

Maybe if you hadn't "drove the skirt off" it would have given better mileage?

Good point John. I do know a few people with higher mileage 3-series (E36) models, but the newer stuff in my opinion is expensive to repair (parts), and seem to require more frequent work, say compared to a Honda, Toyota, etc..

Again, just an opinion. I do have a 2004 Nissan Sentra with almost 200K miles on it, that cost me $12.5K new, and has only had regular service it's entire life, with a few issues more recently (A/C compressor, rear hubs, crank sensor).

Ya, that was my first thought.
My 2001 BMW 330i has 240,000 and going strong. I bought it with 135,000 and have made only minor repairs and maintenance. It seems to me that a BMW with 100,000 is probably in better condition than a Saturn on the showroom floor.

The BMW utes don't share their sedans stellar reputation for quality and durability. A very good friends X5 is on it's 3rd engine,in less than 60k miles. Two of my customers have had their X3 cylinder heads replaced before 100k,so something is def different between the BMW cars and the utes.

Well, we are still looking. Waiting for a 2006 Escape with 71,000 on it to make it through the dealers shop before I offer 10K for it. Hey, talk about not knowing your product: I checked out a clean Jeep Liberty at Contemporary in Milford. 45K, factory clean, asking 12K. Hhhmmmm, I got ready to nab it, when I asked the sales guy if it was AWD for sure, he said of course, it's a Jeep. Ha Ha Ha!!! NOT! it was rear wheel only. DUH!!!!

Make sure you take the Escape for a ride..they have wheel bearing issues as well. I have seem many dealers at auction buy 2wd,thinking they were buying 4wd...even Escapes came front wd only.
