I also meant to go to Lime Rock on the way but I have not left yet because I could not complete preparing my car for WGI in time.

I know that it is probably better not to drive your car to an event that far away but this year I have no choice. Wow is that going to be a long drive. I am going to stick a ham radio in my car and also get some books on tape. Hopefully that will hold my attention.

It's not too bad a drive.. I like the northerly route (rt90)..leave Sunday morning..stop for lunch about the halfway point and then drop down along Lake Seneca by the vineyards..next thing you know..you are there!

I like the 88 route. less traffic, cheaper, much prettier. If you get off 17 in Owego, you can run a nice back road into Horseheads and up 346 to Watkins. There is a pretty large escarpment dowto the lake that gives some beautiful views.

We went the 88 route once this year...thump-thump-thumpity-thump-thump-thumpity thump thump thumpity thump all the way down.....and heavily grooved lanes with all the truck traffic was pitifull..with lots of backups from all the construction...and the hills...and lack of rest areas... The road quality was downright poor..Dan even blew out a tire on the trailer over some of the rough edges. I suppose if you are in a car it makes no difference,but with the trailer and truck, I found myself wishing to be on the northerly route..
I'll gladly pay the toll on 90 and enjoy the smooth level drive,low traffic count....excellent well maintained rest areas...with plenty of views along the way..the old Erie Channel locks...Montezumas swamp..the Mennonites in their horse drawn buggies, and well manicured farmlands.
Not to mention a stop at the wineries (and the recently discovered Wagner brewery offerings.. ) coming into the Glen...

you got me there. we ran the van and trailer last month following wasilko, and it was thumpety thump thump. also, 88 has tougher hills to pull.

there is no way I want to thumpety thumpety all that way with the suspension that I have right now. that would be awful. I will definately try 90.

Checked the NY Toll calculator, and if I'm doing it right it says it's almost a $40 toll for my truck and a trailer to route 414 vs $8 to I-88

Yup.$18 each way for my truck/trailer. Considering the fuel saved not climbing the mountains,I'll bet it evens right out! You must have an air ride seat in that rig and play the radio mighty loud not to notice the road seams. If the northerly route was free,I'll bet it would be a LOT more crowded..

Both routes have benefits, I-90 is smooth sailing but has tolls and is 30+ miles longer than the more scenic I-88/Rt 17 route. There is a lot of construction on Rt17 after Binghamton and the road surface on that route is not as well maintained as I-90.
I am going to try the shortest route Google Maps shows, both shorter and faster than the I-90 route: Rt 88W to Rt 206/41 in Bainbridge to Rt 79W to Rt 414 in Watkins Glen. It might suck for towing but it goes right by the WalMart which I cannot seem to avoid visiting anyway.

If I'm taking the day to drive somewhere,30 mintes one way or another doesn't make a bit of difference to me. Maybe it's because I have been the northern route so many times that it feels so comfortable to travel. I look foreward to seeing all the familiar sights along the way and the tolls are already factored in to my budget,so it's something I don't consider. It's my favorite track,and I enjoy being there as many times a year as possible.
Maybe COM could schedule the Glen for a three day event some year!
