Refreshing my dead brain cells on WGI, I came across this ridiculously fast TR4.



Remember, he's driving 1:20's on BIAS ply tires...

Pretty fast.

The driver is nearing 80 years old. His name is Dick Stockton. I have been working with him for about 5 years on chassis stuff. He got that car new from Triumph. Sold it at one point and about 8 years ago bought it back. He is one deditacted racer and a really interesting guy. He started racing back around 1960 and has owned Cobras to Birdcage Maseratis. I drove this car 2 years ago and it has a crap load of power. We did a few sessions together and I can tell you I was no match for old age and treachery.

Very cool vodeo! Nice to see all the open top cars out there having..fun. :shock: Those guys are very serious! Might have to build me an old Spitfire some day... :D :sunny:

^Maybe on the short course..with a very strong tail wind.. :lol:

From the video log:

1963 Triumph TR4.
car weight ~2200lbs w/ driver, 5.5" wide bias ply vintage tires
Fast lap (last lap) 2.20.8, Finished 4th overall.

What's a minute or two when you're out having fun! Still damn fast for an old relic...(meaning the car...) Never slow down! :D :sunny:

The reason I don't have a Spitfire project is because every one I have looked at is SO rusty..I believe they were made with pre-rusted panels from the factory... :lol: I really do like the Spitfires..I fit in them well,I like the tilt nose and their IRS setup. Too bad they are in such poor shape in these parts. I looked at one a few weeks ago..it could have been driven by the Fred Flintstone method the floors were so bad... :cry:

Have a line on two more bodies that are suppose to be decent, will see, just need to find time to go check them out.

When I heard 1:20 I instantly thought short course and that this car must be a monster. I guess Jeff forgot to add 1 minute to the total time. That thing looks like a blast to drive.

For a reference, the top National SCCA Spec Miatas were running around a 2:20 in early July. Best I can do is a 2:23.5 :cry:

The fresh Hoosiers won't help nearly as much as being in the draft, which SM and w2w racing has in spades.

If our time trials were held during open-lapping sessions there would be a lot of drafting, and our lap records would be quite different..!!

2:21 with no restrictor plate or weight 8) I've found the draft to help most at the top of the esses. If I shift to 5th before the flag station then I know I got help from the car ahead.
