New Tires

Where do you buy new R Compound tires? I am finally going to buy some brand new tires after using hand me downs for the past three seasons. Or maybe not. I am looking at Kumho V710's and have found three places on line, Tire Rack, Discounted Wheel Warehouse and OnlineTires and also the local Town Fair Tire. I didn't expect the tires to be cheap but was surprised at how much they are, the best I can do so far is $178.50 per tire and by the time shipping/mounting/balancing/taxes are done I'm up to almost $900, 1/2 of what my car cost!!! So is there anywhere to get tires without paying an arm and a leg?

Dave Lemoine found a deal on Tire Rack for Kuhmo v710s, but they were clearing out their 2008 stock. I think they are all gone - but we got some for $79/tire (225/45/17). Basically $500/set after shipping, heat cycling, mounting/balancing.

You can get tires with 75%+ tread left and only a few heat cycles. He usually has R6's and RA-1's. $15/tire shipping per tire, and the cost of the tire varies depending on size and condition. However, the most expensive tire for your car is probably $80.

You will find the pricing for most comp. tires to be relatively fixed. There are very small discounts for those who buy wholesale or larger quantities/group buys. My discount from Tire rack on a V710 is around 9%- but then I have to charge 6.25% MA. tax. None of the online sellers are in MA. so you don't have to pay tax. Once you go R-compound it's hard to go back.

They were a couple years old, and TR was trying to get rid of them before they withered and died in a warehouse. We don't mind tires a couple years old, so we grabbed them. I think we got the last 12 they had at that price, though.

Yep, they were 2008 stock, kept in "ideal" conditions at a TR warehouse - we'll use 'em up this year and next, so the age wasn't a concern at all. At $79/tire, how could it be?!?

For anyone driving monster Corvettes or Porsches (or GT40s... GTR... etc.) TR has 345/35R18 and 335/30R19 on sale too, 2007 stock, $91 and $122, respectively. Those should cost ~2-3x.

Thanks for the new places to try. I guess I'll have to monitor TR frequently and see if I can find a closeout deal and buy wheels to fit the tires, it's cheaper that way!
