Re: Vintage racers gone wild
That is a truely nausiating sight. Man there was some serious hardware crumpled up there. I remember a few years back, Sterling Moss crumpling a fender of a car at the Laguna Seca vintage race and there being a mild uproar over that. This is way worse than that. Are the drivers at this event usually the car owners as well or do they use "hired guns" like at Laguna ?
vintage drivers
Mostly owner/drivers.

From what I've read, this particular vintage event tends to attract a lot of car owners that seem to think their race is the for the world championship or something. Very aggressive driving, with minor contact almost a given, so much so that a lot of smarter owners won't even run this event any more.

So bring together an bunch of these guys with very fat wallets, who are building way more horsepower into the cars than they had "in the day", add some varying driving skills and a case of "red mist" as soon as the pace car starts to pull off, and this is what you get.

Yes, this happened at the start of the race. Some accounts have the pace car pulling off but then a late green flag (causing the accelerating back half of the crowd to hit the slowing front half) ; others say someone in the 2nd or 3rd run jogged wide to get out to pass at the start/line and bounced off the wall back into the pack...
