Mosport in May

It may seem far off but registration opens in 20 days!

To get re-acquainted, some in-car with Mike "Booker" in his E30 M3 (Prepared C car). The video does not do justice to the elevation changes but his 8500rpm motor (and gearbox!) is awesome, and he seems to know the line.

20 days?! Yikes.
I wouldn't miss Mosport for anything so I guess I have to get my ass in gear.

That's a great video of Mike. Here's a pic of his car to put it in context.

Why? The two cars had different strong points during a lap and the Suby driver obviously excelled on the back straight. No harm in passing and re-passing if the opportunity presents itself.

It could be me, or it could be the camera lens, but doesn't it seem like Mike turns in early and stays tight inside for a lot of these turns? Is that because those lines are more protective of his position in the race?

I'm with CP on the Subie driver - it also looks like part of the reason he doesn't pull away earlier is that he's driving defensive lines that cost him time until he finally has a big enough lead on the e30 to open up.

@ Troy - I don't know anything about the track, so I couldn't tell you, but positioning wise I don't see why he would need to defend (unless there's someone the viewer can't see behind him). Maybe that's just the fast line for an e30?

The Suby "driver" did not excell on the back straight - the Suby excelled on the back straight - making up for the "driver" missing most every apex.

The suburu (STi) has a huge HP advantage, he literally drives away going down the back straight. His pace into and thru 2, 3, 4 and Moss corner really hurts him and allows Booker to close the gap, it is amazing to me that Booker passed him more than once.

Mike's line looks pretty good to me, if he is hugging or early apexing some corners its because its faster, his lap times at Mosport and the Glen (1:27s & 2:02s) are not slow.

I see, I was just wondering if he were on a hot lap with no traffic if his lines would be a little different. (ie...no one dive bombing on the inside)

The only variations I noticed was when he was setting up to pass or was held up in the braking zone, otherwise his lines looked (to me) to be the same whether in front or behind. He did dive-bomb the STi twice in Moss corner so his entry into 5b was compromised but it would be futile to block (or "protect") heading onto the the back straight given their relative straight-line speeds.

His entry into T2 is about as far right as you can get, his exits are almost always over the curbing (except for T4 & T9), his turn-in may seem early but he's not tightening, slowing, or running out of road at the exits -- maybe not the "DE" line but it seems fast :wink:

Me too. Either the Subaru driver wasn't hitting his marks, or he needs new ones. I don't consider the passes at Moss Corner as dive-bombs. The BMW driver drove his race, and I can appreciate that.

I think if the two drivers swapped cars, the Subaru would have checked out at the start.

I was thinking the same things. Early in some places - but like Fred said, he's finding grip and speed that's relevant to his car. That thing is hooked up. He's got a good bit of downforce going on too. Those are screamin laps.

You m3 guys have some work to do to catch that guy!
