help i want to go racing with you guys
i have a 97 subie impreza 2.2 and need help finding over sized pistions, the ring lands broke and made a nice scratch in the cylinder wall.. im trying get into ssc

Hi Jeff, It's Alex from DSG. I personally didn't see any emails from you but I hope you talked to someone.
I don't think that there's much out there for your motor. If you've got your motor apart you could send a piston to CP. It might match other pistons that they offer. The turbo EJ22 motor has low compression pistons (many available in oversize) but I don't think that there was much aftermarket support for the non turbo 2.2 liter.
So I guess in short, try CP. Look on Nasioc to see what others are doing.
Consider a junkyard motor or a later NA motor from a 2.5 liter car and swapping it in. That might be the most cost-effective method.

i allready asked if i could swap a stock 2.5 in and every one said no in the rules section, i thought if i did that ide be in st3 but they said no i would be in spc so i look up the rules and found out that i would not have the budget to be competive in that class.. owell i found some guy at the part dynosoar? my buddy got a total rebuild kit for his saturn dohc for 225 from their.. so alex do youy do machine work their? and if so wat would you charge to bore .020 out.

Swap in a turbo WRX motor and drive in whatever class that puts you in.

yea i would if i had the $3000+ to make that hapen. you gota rember that some motor swaps arnt just swaping the motor.. i would need the sti trans and rear end so it would hold up to my dumb self

why don't you check out car-parts.com for a used motor . a 2.2 like yours that i replaced in a customers car last year was only 600 dollars .

allready tried all of them have 200k + miles on them if i buy the oem oversized pistions and rings + get the block bored,cleen up the heads a lil bit and all the gaskets it will be around the same price plus i wont scatter the insides all over the track and have to walk home

i don't think you looked to hard there is only one listed with any thing close to 200k on it .most of what i looked at had just over 100k miles . just how many miles are on your car ? your saying you want a cheap way to go . i would think your spending more to over bore and then find pistons that will work ? if push comes to shove you could do a hone and ring on the used motor and install a new oil pump ? there looks to be a good one for 800 dolors with 123k tested good .

thank you last time i looked anything under 180k was 1200 and up.. so time to get the tax return back and start getting parts if the motors stay where they are i will go that route

The 2.5 in my 2001 RS developed terminal rod-knock last year, and it took me a while to find a low-mileage replacement that wasn't insanely expensive. Even so, the engine was $1,100 for a 50k motor. I did a quick search for a 2.2 for you and found some nice examples, but then saw that they were all phase 2. I searched for your model year and there aren't nearly as many nice choices, but there are some.
If I can make one suggestion, it would be to not open the motor. Once things start coming apart, they start getting expensive. Small things like head gaskets & head bolts add up, not to mention a water pump, timing belt, etc. My swap would have been a lot less expensive if I had followed my own advice, but I didn't. It is very tempting to swap out some old parts for new and even make some upgrades "while you are in there". By the time i was done, the total cost was easily twice what I paid for the engine. My 01 RS is fairly stout and despite a touch of rust on the quarter panels (very, very, very, very common), is in pretty good good condition, so I felt it was worth it.
If I can make two suggestions, the second one would be to take a hard look at the cost of replacing your engine versus the cost of replacing the whole car. You might be surprised!

I would suggest that you find a stock motor and leave it alone.As a novice you will need to develop your driving skills first. Modified cars don't have the relibility of stock ones. You need all the tracktime you can get, rather than wrenching on your car and missing your driving sessions. Install a 5 point harness and come play with us.

We've got 20,000 track miles on our '95.
I recently replaced the motor with a 50K unit from Leos. It turned out to be a really good motor. I would definitely recommend going this direction rather than a crate or a modified motor.
However, both times I've put a motor in the car, the water pump failed almost immediately. I have a theory about this, but I won't expound it. Anyway, I suggest doing the water pump and timing belt before putting a junkyard motor into the car. Also check for oil leaks around the back, e.g. main seal, and fix them. Easier now than later.
