Ok, who is making changes in ST4?
Re: Ok, who is making changes in ST4?
I'm hoping to do a 1.8 swap as well (and transmission). Hoping to get it all ready this winter. Not that I'll be much of a contender in St4, it's just where my mostly street car fits class wise.

Bakers did our coilovers and ECU in time for NJMP, and we just came back from spanking 933's and A4's at VIR. The ECU and suspension tuning have turned that car into a demon.
Last things will be the Torsen and tuning the injectors this winter, and then we're at class limits until the engine blows and we put in a 1.8.
Or an LS...

Jeff, what sort of ecu tuning have you done? I've been considering a megasquirt or similar setup after I get the 1.8 swap up and running.

We had DSG install and tune a Megasquirt. Went from 97rwhp on the dyno to 110rwhp after tuning. 1.6 engine.
Compellingly more power, and the computer interface allows adjustment on the fly once you've learned the software.
Great stuff!

Dont change engines because of me I couldnt beat you guy's with a turbo Barry
Re: Ok, who is making changes in ST4?
Wow, 97 to 110 on DSG dyno is good (I think I've heard it reads low). So you had a pretty healthy 1.6L to start! Mine dyno'd at 95 hp up at Performance Dyno. I sent ya email too.6PAK72 wrote:We had DSG install and tune a Megasquirt. Went from 97rwhp on the dyno to 110rwhp after tuning. 1.6 engine.

....or have your passengers heads bounce off your roll cage. Speaking of roll cages, I was thinking of adding one to my car for next season. I've heard mixed views regarding safety when driving a fully caged car on the street. What do you guys think? I also need to replace the clutch on my miata. I don't remember seeing any rules against it but before I buy one are lightweight flywheels legal for ST4?TroyV wrote:My 1.6 is getting tired, and it eats oil at events at the rate of about a quart a day.....especially when Mark drives it...
It doesn't consume oil on the street at all, so I'm assuming track time spent at or around red line to be the culprit.
I'm going to get a proper seat in the car too....my ribs cannot stand another minute in the Momo. I really liked Jeff's Ultrashield Halo seat when I drove his car, so I'll likely go for that, and get it mounted by a pro. I have the other Ultrashield spec seat I got from CY, so I'll finally be able to mount that as a passenger seat with another harness, and not make my passengers puke from getting tossed around.

If you don't see a rule ALLOWING it, then not legal.

Should there be a rule change proposal to clarify when drive train upgrades should be allowed? According to the 2010 rules and based on this method, would a flywheel upgrade not allowed in Street Prepared or Prepared (because flywheel is not mentioned in either section)? Upgrading the clutch, which I would guess most SP and P cars have done anyway, is also not mentioned. After a quick scan, the only mention of drive train is in Showroom Stock, where it specifically states you can't touch it.chaos4NH wrote:If you don't see a rule ALLOWING it, then not legal.
Disclaimer - I am no expert on the rules (it's one reason why I like my cars in Showroom Stock), and am willing to be educated if I missed something...

Rule X: ST
Street Touring automobiles will compete using preparations and modifications allowed in section VI, section IX, plus the following:

been modified in violation of these rules will be classed in Street Prepared or Prepared.
Rule XI: SP
Street Prepared automobiles must comply with section VI, then ANY modifications are permitted while observing the following
restrictions:

I submitted a rule change to open up clutches but not flywheels in ST. If you feel it's a good change, consider requesting it as well:blindsidefive0 wrote:Should there be a rule change proposal to clarify when drive train upgrades should be allowed? 12. Any clutch disc and clutch cover (pressure plate) may be used, providing
they mount on an unmodified flywheel.

Jeff -
I think that must be one of the proposals that got lost in the ether, along with Peter's - and some others, I'm sure. Better re-submit it.

Jeff,
I support a clutch rule change and submitted one to include any flywheels. I figure if I'm going to upgrade the clutch why not do the flywheel as well.

Re: Ok, who is making changes in ST4?
If we approve the flywheel change, we're opening the drivetrain to change, logically. Torsen rear ends were stock on Miatae, so they are allowed, but what if I want to change rear end ratios, go with a progressive diff, switch a flywheel, install a lighter starter....might as well open up a new SP class.
