Championship - How to score?
Re: Championship - How to score?
Let's see - the Baker household pitches in:
1. We got married
2. We retired the Triumph (mostly)
3. We got a Miata
Hmmm...maybe we're just not old enough yet
Seriously, we both would support a change to best of N if that came up. We did our best this year to come out, yet still I had to miss 2 of the away events, and Liz missed those and another NH day to to work conflicts.
Also, we both would pay for an added day at an away track - we're taking the time, what's one more day - and it is easier to manage weekends around work commitments, of course, so we both feel +$100 to +$150 for a great track on a weekend would be worth it to keep our vacation days in the bank.
And a huge shout out to the Board for getting us the schedule we had this year. It was fantastic.

Re: Championship - How to score?
Thanks Bert, but not arguable in my mind. The guy gets screwed for doing more events.

Well, if I understand what Bert did there the other way to look at this is the guy who did less events gets screwed because he couldn't make every event; yet beat the person with more events when they both attended.chaos4NH wrote:Thanks Bert, but not arguable in my mind. Re: Championship - How to score?
Just two different ways to look at it. I'd much rather win a championship with COM because I was the best at each event I could attend, knowing if I miss one or two it's ok, instead of winning because I had the funds and schedule to allow me to attend all events, where a better driver in the class might not. The driver with more events has the same option to drop a bad event or miss one. This is a hobby for most members I suspect, not a job with unlimited funds or time.
Again, since I'm not in a position to make every event that's the way I feel. It's would be nice to know if you miss an event, or have a bad event, it doesn't ruin your season. If in a position to attend all events; I could see how someone might feel differently.

Re: Championship - How to score?
In my first full year back with COM, 2006, I couldn't make the event at Summit Point. It cost me the SSB year end championship. Did I feel like I got the short end of the stick? Nope, I did then and still do think that the most points wins. I use all my 15 days of vacation for this endeavor, and I know I am fortunate to be able to do that. Good topic, it will be interesting to see where it goes.

2007 ST2 -- great example of how Best of N would affect who wins the title.chaos4NH wrote:In my first full year back with COM, 2006, I couldn't make the event at Summit Point. Consider me a convert to best of N. All it takes is one black cloud to ruin your day. Have it structured so you keep your attendence points, though.

Re: Championship - How to score?
Yea,rain. It's happened before, and I am sure it will happen again. I must have been on Sams bad side that day...
A best of N would eliminate some of the lady luck factor, and if attendance points were kept and not dropped, that would also help out those who make the effort to go to every event.
The example above, '07 ST2 results clearly show the bias the current system has toward attendance in crowning a class champion.Frank was clearly the faster entry when both drivers went head to head. Tough break,Frank..but those were the rules in place. I guess that's why this is under discussion..

Re: Championship - How to score?
FYI, even under a Best of N (N=1) Frank STILL loses 69-68 because of attendance points ... if only Frank had gone to Mosport.

Re: Championship - How to score?
I think you could set an amount of awards per class available for each event. Say 5or 6 then after the event order the awards needed given out at the next event. Then if some one comes
in a place other than the top three that is usually taken by people that have been in the club for a while. That might entice more people to enter the time trials and more events if they
don't feel they have no chance of winning anything .Who knows after a few 4th or 5ths they could be 1st or second .This dose not change my attendance as I have done all the time trials
the last two years.I think the championship should be from all events run.Barry

Re: Championship - How to score?
In some karting championships Amos and I have run, there were races every weekend all summer: ~20 races. To run all of them would have required not just commitment (no other life) but luck. The drop-2 system in that series worked perfectly.
To me the following points argue for a drop approach:
- Rain variation during a time trial is a lottery.
- Most of us have jobs and families (weddings, graduations, funerals).
- This is an amateur thing.
I'd be in favor of a drop-1 system for COM. Dropping 2 is too many for the relatively small number of events we have.
I doubt that the effect on attendance will be measurable either way. But this would make things slightly fairer, and people prefer a club that seems interested in fairness.
