sunoco fuel

Post by 962porsche » Mon Aug 09, 2010 8:38 pm

there has be talk on some other forums about this . it seams that sunoco race fuel has ethanol in it . chris diasio did a test and found that the ethanol based fuel has alot of sediment in it . on the diasio ,ferrari and porsche forums many people have been getting clogged injectors and filters with people that only use sunoco race fuels . this has also happend to a good friends turbo honda drag race car twice this year . ya put a chain in it and DRAG it to the junk yard !!! all the people state the same thing they store there fuel in plastic fuel jugs .it needs to be stored in metal cans . what was found is that after only 2 day of sitting the fuel will start to get sedimention .

the two he tested were the unleaded 260gt plus and the mo2x lines of fuel .my friend and customer matt on the ferrari forums said that he was using there 260gt fuel in his 355 and that was the same fuel as rob with the turbo honda . i'm not saying its not good fuel just don't store it in plastic fuel jugs . if it states on the pump that there is ethanol in the fuel store it in steel cans .

I would think fuel with ethanol (alcohol) in it should be stored in plastic rather than steel due to the corrosion problems related to ethanol. Are you sure you don't have that backwards?

from what chris diasio has stated in his tests when air get to it the fuel starts to separate . i put fuel with 10% ethanol in a piant mixing cup last night . this morning i looked at it and yes its starting to separate . there is about 2 mill thick film on the bottom of the cup . i also did it with the torco blue fuel i use in the vw and there is no film in the bottom of the mixing cup .

Plastic is as sealed,or air tight as steel.I understand ethanol is very aerobic, but from what I have learned,it should be stored in noncorrosive containers; plastic or stainless.Todays fuel "blends" will stratify if allowed to sit,no matter what type of container they are in.

I think the steel versus plastic came from ethanol eating up plastic parts in older boats and outdoor tools.

all plastic fuel cans and tanks breath . a test to prove this point is put a sticker on a plastic fuel can it will fall off in a day .why ? becouse the fuel vapors pass right thru the plactic . any one who rides off road motorcycles that have plastic tanks will tell you the same thing . from the test i'm doing my self right now it seams to be true about the sunoco fuel . the torco is still not separated and the sunoco now has a good layer on the bottom of the cup . its only been about 24 hours from the time i started this test . after 48 hours i will agitate the fuel in the paint shaker to see if it blends back together . the sunoco also has a much higher evaporation rate than the torco blue . i filled the 2 cups up to the 100ML line and the sunoco is now down to the 80ML line were the torco is only down to just at the bottom of the 90 ML line . i just opened up the metal QT paint can i put some sunoco fuel in . it does not look like its separating at all but i can't see thru the side of the can to be sure . the test goes on ! ethanol does not eat the plastics that fuel cells and fuel tanks are made out of . which are PPK plastics . it will soften TPO plastics only ! but thats becouse of the terrifin in the plastic that is added for a mold release .

this pertains to all ethanol based fuels not just race fuel !!!! it just show up quicker on the higher tune of most race cars . but the same things happen to every day street driven car . its real real bad when it comes to a 2 cycle motor . you must not know that there are alot of 2 stroke motorcycles and other RV'S out there ? and don't forget all the F440's and 500's ! if you want to use an ethanol based fuel have at it .

As long as there is sufficient oil in the fuel, plus, you may have to jet a bit fatter..but it should be fine in a healthy 2 stroke. Has for me for many years using the crap 10% mix we have now. I hope Ma. doesn't go to E85. NH would never endorse that weasel piss! You are conducting these experiments in a well ventilated area..?
