3-time SPB-winning 240Z F/S

Post by DanB » Thu Dec 10, 2009 11:15 pm

It's been a long, fun ride, but it might be time to let the Z go due to my being unemployed since July and lack of a serious garage/workspace (the car is kept in a garage space, but no room to work on it).

The car is a street/track compromise, ideally suited for COM. It won the SPB championship in 2002, 2003, and 2009 (tie).
It's a very fast car, this year’s times do not represent what it is capable of.

Watkins Glen 2009: 2:15.406 This was without 3rd gear, which broke in practice. Lugging all the way up the hill out of the toe was AGONY in 4th! Transmission was rebuilt by DentSport Garage, should be good for another 80+ track days...

NHMS4 2009: 1:18.519 Slid off track on the outside of 6 on the money lap (no impact/no damage)

Note that these times were set this year on ancient Hoosier A3S04s, made in 2002! On fresh rubber, the car is *easily* good for 1:17's or better at NHMS, and with 3rd gear as well, 2:13’s at the Glen are definitely in the cards.

Engine: 3.1 liter L28 (280Z motor with Maxima diesel crank, KA24E pistons, 240Z rods), 3x2bbl 45mm OER Racing carburetors, .550"/310deg cam and head work (porting & chamber shaping) done by Sunbelt Engines in Atlanta (you can’t get this stuff no more), 40.5cc chambers, 11.6:1 CR, runs full (36deg) advance on 93-octane pump. Dynoed at 255rwhp: http://www.classiczcars.com/photopost/d ... e03run.JPG
Please note that this dyno run breaks up above 6200 due to emergency swapping in of 240Z points, as the 280Z electronic distributor I had failed the day before! Points were replaced afterwards with a Pertronix Ignitor magnetic pickup, rest assured it pulls hard to redline (set at 7200rpm).
Transmission: close-ratio 5-speed (closer 1-4 than the early Z 5-speeds, closer 4-5 than later ZX 5-speeds, good for all COM tracks, from NHMS to Watkins Glen)
Differential: 3.70 clutch-type LSD

Suspension: 160F/200R springs, Tokico Illumina 5-way adjustable struts, 1” front sway, ¾” rear (removed for neutral handling), lengthened front control arms, camber bushings front and rear (allowing rear toe adjustment as well), slotted shock towers, offset poly strut isolators, currently at 2.5* camber all around, top of strut isolators need to be cut off to allow 3+ up front (minor job with zizz wheel).
Kirk Racing 4-point roll bar with diagonal and harness bar, Momo seat

Wheels/tires: 225/50-14 Hoosier A3S04s on 14x7 Enkei 92 wheels (14 lb.), 225/50-15 Bridgestone S-03s on Panasport 15x7s. Pleanty of tread on the S-03's and the Hoosiers, but it is probably time for new tires…

The car is straight and for the most part rust-free. There are a couple of rust holes in the floorboards repaired with fiberglass about 15 years ago, and the fiberglass is losing its grip. But the rust worm has been held at bay. The dash is crack-free! Unheard of… Some small/minor rust spots on the chrome bumpers.
The car is an outstanding “20-footer”, but not perfect. The interior vinyl has come unglued, I have the HVAC control panel but it is not installed, the tacho and speedo do not work (needs a new speedo cable and a tach that works with the MSD 6AL ignition).

The car has frequently been the fastest car driven to and from events with COM (too bad there’s not a trophy for that!).

Looking to get $9600 for it. Must admit, if I have to keep it I won’t be disappointed :P

The car is in Proidence/Pawtucket, RI.

Dan. You neglected to mention that the car is the current SPB track record holder at NHIS, and that it has a fresh clutch
