Post by breakaway500 » Thu Nov 19, 2009 8:37 am

Umm..wow. What a track..what a car and what a driver. 6minutes,48 seconds. Radical SR8LM driven by Michael Vergers. Car is for sale,by the way...

You got to admit, the ring is awsome! Out there with a helmet, driving gloves, and short sleeves.

I did notice his "driving suit" Amazing what they allow out on track at those speeds. I guess they don't have any rules.. I don't have the stones to drive so..naked..

From what I read, the Ring is operated like a normal public toll road - you pay some 20-ish Euros for a lap and enter whatever vehicle you brought, with normal German traffic rules applying - hence a sort-sleeve and sandals are okay, unless you are on a motorcycle (we require helmet & proper outfit over there). You also drive on your own responsibility. That being said, some insurances and rental car companies apparently do not consider the Ring a public road and may drop coverage / charge huge fees for rental car wear. If you cause a crash, on top of having to pay the damage to your car and others, the Ring also charges for the flatbed truck, and for the armco that you bent.

There are however a bunch of companies that rent out track cars, and who wouldn't love to sit in the M5 ring taxi driven by Sabine Schmitz? :D

There are a bunch of websites that give advice for Ring tourists. Their main advice: people still die there and Gran Turismo does not prepare you - take it slow and don't EVER time your laps unless you have done 1000s before.

It's on my list of things to do for my next visits back home. Weird going home and NOT having an own car there. Mom's Toyota Starlet has a beefy engine and weighs nothing, but I doubt she'd let me.... Maybe I can bribe dad into using his turbodiesel Merc if a) I buy him a lap for each one I do and b) I buy a new set of pads & rotors afterwards 8)

Thanks for the warning - next season at NHMS, will adjust my mirrors so I can see flat fast vehicles approaching from behind... :D

I like this one. Not quite as quick a time but with traffic. Stuck is such a pleasure to watch. Can you imagine trying to put down a lap like that with other cars on track being driven by people who may or may not have ever been on any track. Not to mention no corner workers. Like Hobbs would say " that guy has got serious attachments".

Enjoy

Absolutely! I love watching this video. As far as other people on the track, how would you like to be closing on someone at about 125 and see his left blinker go on as he prepares to move out of the way? Of course, Hans has about a million hours on that track and his team dominated the 24 hours at the ring for years.

I can never pass up the opportunity to "rub in" the fact that I drove the old, longer 'Ring back in 1964 and again in 1966. First with my Judson supercharged 1200cc Beetle and then with my turbo'd Corvair. The "traffic" made it interesting for sure, but the elevation changes are what I remember most. The run down through the Adenau Forst would even allow the VW to get scary fast! Anyway, as Ryan can attest, it is a life experience! :!:

I know this is somewhat of a re-post, but in this one Stucky talks us through the entire lap. Fantastic and I think the comment at 7:23 pretty much works for the whole lap.

^That's a pretty incredible video. I think the phrase "stay on the gas,no lifting" sums up that lap for me. Wow.M3 GTR. 500hp. That's a real race car.

I love the enthusiasm, he obviously is joyful running this! "Ah this is the part of the track that seperates the boys from the girls..."
