Has anyone seen differential fluid turn black

If the unit is already in the process of eating itself for breakfast, maybe the fluid would look like that pretty fast?

Change the fluid. If it turns black again, you have a problem. If not, then you are confident that the fluid as changed and not just topped off. :D

That's the strategy right now. I'm going to take it back in tomorrow and see what we get out of it.

Unfortunately, even replacing the fluid didn't solve the strange noise that took me in in the first place :(

Do Sti's use clutch packs in their diffs,or are they a Torsen style?

Helical, I believe. Unlike the crappy viscous type I'm pushing 300 hp through.

Your only counting the gas horsepower! There's another 150 windshield washer horsepower your not talking about :twisted:

04 sti had clutch pack style front (suretrac iirc) and rear i have not taken apart a center diff yet but i do know it uses electromagnet for something.
05+ front is helical rear is clutch pack same basic center diff
need parts for your trailer, welding repairs/fabrication (sorry cant do aluminum), tires mounted and balanced, feel free to email/pm me. i am located a little west of nashua. ted

What did the trash magnet on the bung look like? Furry or cleaned? If a tech had it out I would imagine it would be wiped clean.
