Car classing

I meant to ask this before the rules closed for 2006 but forgot. Why is the 944 turbo when in SP or P trim an "A" car? As a 4cyl turbo it seems like it should be a SPB or a PB. Is it really that much of an overdog to warrant the only exception?

I guess somebody figured it's "Porsche-ness" gives it some kind of inherent advantage, and so reasoned that it should be in a *theoretically* faster class. However, look at the '02 season, and it's clear that the 944 Turbo S that won SPA would have probably had a harder time of it in SPB!

By the time you get to Street Prepared, enough mods are allowed that starting out as a Porsche or BMW or whatever doesn't really give an advantage anymore, IMO.

Don't you know a guy who does 57's at LRP in his 944T?
Then again, maybe its the driver. He also turns 1:03's in a miata.

Way back when, the 944 was deemed an exception to 4 bangers because of it's large displacement. This time in the rules discussion we talked about correcting these aberrations and sticking to the pure SP 4, 6, 8 cyl definition with turbo/super bumping up one. I am not sure, but maybe this recent change got flushed along with the whole class readjustment effort of Kevin's.

Its certainly a 'hairy' area as the 944 4 banger has a higer displacement than my Audi 5cyl at 2.2 and in theory makes more power, however that motor is classified into A instead of B as well. (also a turbo car)

As I am building the Audi right now I am actually contemplating going to the 4.2L 40V V8 with 2 turbos as it will be classified in SPA the same as the 5cyl (I presume - does 1 turbo vs 2 turbos make a difference - the rules dont seem to say anything about this (as the type44 audi did ship with the V8 as an option) (plus it will upset Scott more ;) )

I think the 944t was supposed to be placed in SPB, but never made it in print. This is according to Mario B. God knows the cars can be fast enough for SPA.

Timmy, 1,2,5 turbos...still SPA. Not scared, just hoping to keep up long enough to hear that blow-off valve squeek like in the video...I can't get enough of that vid.

IMO, it oughta go by displacement rather than cylinder count, with a 2.0 factor for turbos and a 1.67 factor for supercharging.

SPC up to 2.2
SPB up to 3.6
SPA unlimited

Or some such.

The fairest way (IMHO) to classify anythign is power to weight ratio (excluding handling usses hypothetcally). but that would require dyno testing all vehicles..so thats out......

So the current system with a handicap maybe...theres no real good solution is my guess so its really all about having fun.

Yeah I hear you scott - I really should just stick with my 10V turbo and maybe get the thing on teh track this year, but then again .....

Street Prepared Old - 4 6 or 8 cylinders, carburators and points ignitions only? :lol: :lol:

Many years ago when SP was ceated as a highly modified engine, street-chassis car I was totally opposed to 4, 6, 8 cyl as SPC, SPB, SPA but if you look at the history of competitors it has worked amazingly well. Don't change it. The purity of SP became tainted when we treated 944s with their large displacement as different. Don't forget that is legal for a Miata to be in SPC with a homemade 5 liter four cylinder engine costing $100,000. Or a mustang to be in SPA with a blown 2,000 horsepower custom engine (just no nitro).
We need MORE radical mods to compete for these little troohies! :twisted:

Well, guess it is my turn to... Am lodged in STGT, a lowly 3L decades old naturally asperated Ferrari 308 with a mere 240 HP.

Also available to the same class is:
BMW M3, 2001+, M5 V8
Corvette ZR1
Dodge Viper ACR
Ferrari F40, F50, 328 and 348 Challenge
Ford Mustang Cobra Supercharged
Porsche 911 RS and RSR

So i am soooooooooo S.O.L. There is NO WAY my lil 308 could touch a M3/M5, ZR1, let alone the likes of a F40 (awesome driver's car) or Viper.

So what gives?
