I've got the Gopro camera figured out..mostly

Post by breakaway500 » Sun Aug 30, 2009 7:55 pm

Was messing with the GoPro on my field unit practice buggy today. Audio was messed up by the electrics on the buggy so I dubeed in some calming music. Good for the arm and back muscles. My kind of execising! Couldn't reach the on/off button strapped in though..

Mark, was on their website (GoPro) reading about it and saw this:
"Memory: 16 MB internal, expandable to 2GB with SD card (not included), expandable to 4GB with SDHC card (not included) via free software download from GoPro website—available soon"

Looks like a 4GB ability will be available soon.

Yeah, this is what it notes in regards to the update for capacity and batteries:

"Capacity: 56 minutes video (incl. audio) or 1,945 photos with optional 2GB SD card. 1hr 52min video (incl. audio) with optional 4GB SDHC card—available soon

Power: 2x AAA batteries (not included), lithium batteries highly recommended. 3hrs. video recording with lithium, 2hrs. with NiMH"

I just ordered the camera for $154 online through ebay and picked up two 2GB SD cards on Amazon for like $18 shipped with a free card reader.

Going to throw the hardtop on the Miata for the October autox events and try to mount it on the roof or rear window. Hopefully the wide angle will let me see both my hands and the course. I'll probably experiment with it before te events; any tips let me know.

BTW: The suspension goes in on Sept. 26th. If you have any miata specific alignment setting suggestions let me know! :-)

Turn the volume up if you want any audio. It seems the default is low and you can barely hear anything.

I run 1.5-2 degrees neg camber all around and a touch (1/16") of toe in up front and 0 in the rear. Those settings would be ok for a street driven car as well as track. Pretty much how I like all my cars set up..funny how that happens sometimes... 8) Track only settings would be more agressive, but tougher on tires.

Is this a unit people are happy with? I will attempt to run my FF for the 1st time in many years at the last event and it might be fun to have a movie to watch. Considering it will only be the 3rd time in 20 years I've run the car, the video might be entertaining.

A club member made a Super 8 movie of me running Mt. Ascutney many years ago, but lost touch with him and never got a copy. Now I would like to be able to look back and watch it, but no such luck unfortunately. Does anyone in the club know where Dave Burden landed up? I think that's who made the movie, but maybe I've confused people.

Hey Paul- -- too bad you ordered one on line, I have been selling them to Com members for $160- including Shipping  I also have some of the fancier camera sets ups with screen, radio and MP3 player, lipstick helmet camera all kinds of cables and hook ups for only $349-. As far as the GoPro, The quality of the video is surprising you can even set the camera to take pictures every 5 seconds, or other intervals. Good luck with it. :D

I haven't heard from Dave Burden for a few years. Maybe he is still a mamber? I find the GoPro very good for the money. Always use Lithium batteries. I must use the LO setting for audio as the exhaust and rattling on my Formula Enterprises car is too loud. Easy enough to edit the videos with the free Microsoft video editor included with XP and later.

So what do you folks think about the wide angle version compared to the standard. It looks a little too wide on the videos on the GoPRo website. I would probably mount it on my FF's roll bar...

Hey Marcus, Dave Burden is currently Vice President of the Sports Car Club of New Hampshire. You can get his phone number and email address from their web site, http://www.sccnh.org. Good luck with the movie!
