Hello Fred, I am by no means the source for the 300z info- but here's my take. If you are looking to go club racing with SCCA, the Z is not well suited for the ITS class that it falls into. The BMWs and the RX7s and even the 280z are the frontrunners. If your goal is to time trial with COM, I think it's a good platform. In stock form it should start in SSGT- which seems to me to be a bit much to chew on. The non-turbo 300Z goes against the 3.0l turbo Supra :dontknow:
SHOWROOM STOCK GT (SSGT)

Generally All SCCA SSGT Cars
BMW 328, Z3 2.8L, 535, 633, 635 (except M3 6-cyl, M5, M6), Z4 3.0l,
X5 4.4 & 5.4
Chevrolet Camaro V8 (except SS Ram Air, 1LE, SLP)
Chrysler Corp., mass-produced FWD Intercooled Turbo (except Shelby GLH
intercooled turbo)
Corvette (solid rear axle)
Datsun/Nissan 280ZX Turbo, 300ZX Turbo
Dodge Stealth normally aspirated
Dodge Neon SRT-4
Ford Mustang V8 (except Cobra and Saleen)
Mazda RX7 Turbo
Mercury Capri 302
Mitsubishi 3000 GT normally aspirated
Nissan 300ZX V6 normally aspirated
Pontiac Trans Am
Porsche 911 NOC (except RS, RSR), 944 Turbo (except Turbo S), 944S,
944S2, 968, Boxster
Saab 9000 Aero
Subaru WRX
Toyota Supra 3.0 turbo, MR2 turbo
Volvo 5-cyl turbo

BUT it's still a great handling rear wheel drive platform.
I'm sure others with more Z knowledge will be more help.

Welcome.

Email me off line, not to brag, but considering I own the only two Z31's I've seen on the track in the north east in the past few years, I probably have more seat time in a 300zx in the past five years than anyone else in the club.

Don't konw as much about the turbos, but the NA's are bullet proof.

You just want a car that's fun at the track, or do you want to build a competitive race car?

The Z31 300ZX tends to be underrated, but it's a lot lighter-weight than the '90+ Z32 300ZX. I think it should make a GREAT street/track car.

Matt is yer man for track setup for sure.

Oh yeah, like Scott said, it is a bit misclassified in COM. Should be an SSA car for SURE. No way it's competitive in SSGT. So if you really wanna win trophies in COM, it's not the best car to do it in. My personal opinion is to drive what you want and not worry about $10 trophies. Whatever speed you're going, you'll find similar-speed cars to "race" with, whether they're in your class or not.

Matt, don't you still have one of those cars for sale, with SCCA logbook and ready to race?

Rules show it in SSGT:

SHOWROOM STOCK GT (SSGT)

Nissan 300ZX V6 normally aspirated

That trumps the "Datsun/Nissan Z cars NOC" entry under SSA, as the 300ZX V6 na IS otherwise classified as SSGT.

This has GOT to be an oversight, though. '84-'89 300ZX na should definitely be in SSA.

I do have one for sale.

I mis-read the first post & thought this was all about the turbo version.

Since I was wrong, DeadeyeB should contact me rather than mess around w/ any SS classing problems. This car is the King of PB for those of you who remember me winning the season by driving in 2 events (up against my wife & my father). (smirk)
