I raced 6 years for money and I got to admit, that I did get back about 1/2 of my operating cost through prize money. But as Barry said, it is a different world than wat we do, and only the top few finishing positions would cover the expenses of the night. All the money that I took in is gone, but I still have the trophies.

Sponsorship Possibilities?
Re: Sponsorship Possibilities?
Like they said, "Easy come, easy go". At least it helped you in some form or another. It's better then nothing in some ways.jlwhorf wrote:I raced 6 years for money and I got to admit, that I did get back about 1/2 of my operating cost through prize money. Winning pay ranged between $200-$500 and between $75-$100 to start. The difference is that people pay to watch the races, so thats where the revenue for the payoffs comes from. One of the entry level divisions gave the winner the choice of either a trophy or a $25 pay. I guess we could do it if we used generic trophies with out event date engravings.

The other thing you could do is have a sponsor for an event. Have them give a product (set of tires, case of oil, etc) and put their name on the website, reg. page, any forms etc. Then raffle off the product at an event.
And FWIW, I don't think the attitude around COM would change if there was prize money involved. We're a competitive time trial club already.

As a former publicity person for COM, i used to do the things described above. The membership got to be 600+. i also did a local cable TV program for COM. Any way to spread COM's message should be looked at.

Re: Sponsorship Possibilities?
I think a monetary reward for placing would be difficult. There are too many classes and the average cars in COM are too expensive. The club has changed over to things like requiring point-bys and awarding trophies based on a single lap, which seems to be a movement to a less competitive or more of a "just have fun" type attitude.I'm sure this has been thought out previously by someone, but do we actually have anything like a reward system beside improving driving skills or just trophies?
When money is involved it encourages cheaper, faster cars. People in BMWs and Proches will be saying "that wasn't a point-by, he sucked my arm out the window." I love those cars because they are about going fast. Think Modifieds.
Maybe this could be experimented with in a couple of picked classes though. It would make a lot of sense for a Formula Ford or even Formula Prepared class - we need more entries there - maybe that would encourage some people that used to compete to return. Another class might be the IT type cars. Or perhaps tube framed cars - that would get some oval track rigs here and also formula cars.
