Carbon fiber body

Post by DanDarcy » Mon Jul 27, 2009 9:17 pm

I am consider a carbon fiber front and rear clam (body) for my Lotus Elise, What would that do for car classification ?
I found the carbon fiber parts from a supplier in Hong Kong for less money than the stock fiberglass parts.

Isn't the stock body basically the same construction, made of composites and resins, glued together? So you are substituting Carbon fibers for glass fibers in a Stock body pattern, right? It sure would look wild, as the rest of the car is black. I have seen the Lotus with full CF bodies before..

Not sure what class you're in now, but sounds like an SPC car where replacement CF body panels are allowed.

I was going to run it in STGT, the same class as my Mustang but , as you know Les, the body fell apart at the last event. The carbon fiber pieces from Asia weight about the same at the stock fiberglass but cost less and look cool. I doubt if they are any stronger and I'm sure they won't be the last body parts I have to buy for it. Learning a new car can get expensive. :(

Put it before the rules commitee.
It took you three years to get the panard bar passed, and you used it maybe once?
Give us five years on the CF body, we'll see what we can do.

Hey Dan,

If you paint the body, how would anyone know. :?

I'm sure no one will send a composite sample to a lab. Then again, if someone does, it might come back positve for meth.

Jonathan -- it would be a shame to paint over that pretty carbon fiber  but first I have to buy the car back from my insurance company. I am negotiating with them and hope to be done by Friday . If they want to much, I may be looking for an other car. :D

Hi Tom, we miss you at the track :(

I still have the Mustang, its just like a TIMEX -- it keeps on ticking :o
My wife though I should stop using the Mustang--- she called me a "trophy whore" for using it and winning most of the time ( 10 firsts , 2 seconds in the last 12 times I used it)
She wanted me to use another car so I started using a Lotus Elise I had. At the last NHMS I had a slight altercation with the wall between 9 - 10 , wall won  . Not anybodies fault but the drivers, too fast on sticker tires in the pouring rain. I'm too old to think up excuses . I need front and rear clam (body). When you hit anything with a Lotus they just blow apart, there are no bumpers, no rubber covers, no metal supports, just fiberglass.

I hope to make it this Sunday, can't do Saturday , will have the good old Mustang :D

Hi Dan:
My 2 cts is I'd run this my the Tech guys BUT I would also mention this to the SSGT class competitors and tell them there is no difference in weight. If they do not object if should be good to go. All in the spirit of sportsmanship.
