You are not alone Mick! It has been 34 years since my first drive on the old, 14 mile circuit. Only had a supercharged beetle, but had an aftermarket suspension and best touring tires of the day. Talk about exhilarating elevation changes! The second time I drove it was in 1968 (took a side trip to Southeast Asia in between) in a turbo Corvair.
I wish I could remember more of the details, but suffice to say, those were two of the high points of my motoring days!
The old long track had a 3 1/2 mile down hill run through the Adenau Forst into the town of Andenau - 3 1/2 miles of "pucker" factor! Then it was uphill to the Karousel Kurve, which nearly ate up the Corvair! The cost to run was supposed to be 20DM (about $5.00 then) per lap, but the guys taking the money kept waving me through.
Also watched Jim Clark, Graham Hill, John Surtees, Phil Hill, Pedro and Ricardo Rodriguez, Jackie Stewart, etc run there in the German Gran Prix and various sports car events.
Maybe next year? :D

Mick, I'm so glad you posted those photos. I had forgotten about the event since we talked about it a while back. All I can say is that I wish I was there.

Some of those Mercedes are run/rebuild by JH Motorsports in Germany. I don't know much about their shop but I see a lot of stuff posted by them on this German forum I'm on. (not the porn film one)

The purple and blue one are Klasse 1 cars, which I guess started in 1993 and was a little more forward thinking/relaxed on rules pertaining to composites/brakes and suspension pickup points. I think my favorite M3 is the Tic Tac car.

I have a pretty big collection of 190e motorsports photos here- http://www.flickr.com/photos/grabau/set ... 377127326/ if anyone's interested.

Some rare parts.

Maybe you can tell me... one of those photos had slide, or guillotine throttle bodies on the E30. Is that normal? They looked CNC so I'm assuming that they weren't a product of the early 90s since most of the older stuff was cast/forged.

Alex,
That 190 photo collection is great. I'd love to pick one of those up one day. They're cheaper than M3's and tastefully modified ones seem less common in the US.

The early factory cars used butterflies, later DTM cars ran slide throttles made by Motorsport. You can still find originals but they are big $$.

There is a German company making replicas which I think is what we see in those photos.
http://www.scheel.ch/motorsportteile.htm

These are only 2400.00 EUR € ..still cheaper than original Motorsport throttles though.

I'm going to check out those pics now. On the lancer Register (UK forum) people tow their Evos to the track with VW Golfs!

This is the first DTM spec motor that Mercedes made. I think it's like 87 or so.

Image

This is the last spec- Klasse 1 racer. I don't know what the difference in the throttle bodies are but this second engine is 2.5 liter.

Standard street arrangement-

Image

Very common to cut the runners on the intake manifold and shorten the runner path which I did (see welds on runners) on mine but never tested.

I love comparing these two cars. I think that BMW blew Merc out of the water on the intake with the street car. Mercedes had that stupid bobber throttle body and BMW had the ITBs. The TB in the picture is from another car, not the 190. I adapted that TB and Ford EDIS to that motor in the pic...I think that the Merc motor makes more torque for some reason (purely observational having owned both) Merc could have benefitted from Rack and Pinion steering although I never noticed a shortcoming in the box/arm arrangement.

My next car is going to be either the 190 or the m3.

We just got our next big project car in the shop yesterday. It's a Brilliant Rot E30. Some details include

Motec M4- we're making a Tefzel/Raychem mil-spec style harness for it
2.5 liter VAC motor with cams (not all together.. i need to finish it)
twin plate clutch with light F/W
ATL spare tire fuel cell
Brembo brakes
Moroso pan (mixed feelings on these since they usually leak)
DSG exhaust
Rally header
Carbon Plenum
Fikse 2 pc wheels

.. looking forward to this one. Done rambling I'm so bored right now.

Those are the shortened runners? It doesn't seem like there's room for them to be any longer.

I like the ITB setup better too, the only downside is maintenance. I wonder if the Mercedes team was under more pressure to make concessions for the road going version of the car. Which could be why they ended up with a sedan, no ITB's and a motor that made more torque down low at the expense of top end.

Can't wait to see the M3 come together. Take lots of pics.
What are you doing for the Brembo brakes? Are you custom making brackets and hats? If so, did you consider the Massive kit?
I haven't heard anything about the VAC Moroso pan leaking. I know there's another company that makes a custom pan but I can't find it at the moment (S14.net is down). This guy Conrad from New Zealand that is making a small run of cast DTM replicas http://board.s14power.com/showthread.php?t=5467 6-8 week time frame probably wont work for you though. You could also make your own, that's what these guys do. http://www.brmmotorsports.com/productde ... oductid=81 I don't like their baffle but the extension on the pan seems like it would be pretty straightforward for you guys.

Speaking of crazy tow vehicles, here's one for the scrap book.

Good to know about the Moroso. They fit like SH@# on the STI and Evos so I assumed that this would be the case on the BMW as well.

I can't imagine having an Evo III or III replica and then using it as a tow vehicle. I think I'd do it if I had the means.

My friend Jude has a Euro M5 wagon 3.8 liter. He uses that to tow his cars to the track. Not bad but not as extreme as the M3; not much torque from the S14.

The guy that we're building this car for has a set of 17s on the car now that he wants to sell. They're 5 spoke sort of rounded spoke wheels with BMW centercaps. They look pretty good. You could probably buy them for a song if you need another set of wheels.

Thanks. I have way too many wheels these days, but I'd be curious to know what they are. Guess you never can have too many.
