ASAP: Rules clarification for student in SSU car.

Post by TroyV » Fri Apr 10, 2009 10:03 am

I have a buddy that is signed up as a student for WGI in SSU driving an 03 Cobra Convertible. He has a very nice bar that was done by the same guy that did Brian Stonkus' cage. The car has stock seats, and he has purchased arm restraints.. I was under the impression that arm restraints only worked with harnesses, and that harnesses are required for verts with bars...but I have looked the rules over and can't find any text to support that. I spoke with Mick, and he has seen folks use the stock belts and attach restraints to the belt anchor bolt locations...so that just served to confuse me more. :)

Is he good to go, or does he need to have harnesses installed? I realize that he should have them anyway, but as he is a student, I think he looking just to get some seat time to see if he likes it.

I can't imagine him not.

Some arm restraints will work with stock belts and are OK with COM. Mine won't because they have a loop at the end through which the stock belt can't go. That said, the FIRST performance improvement to a car should be the belts. Cheap! It is hard to hold yourself in the seat using your elbow pushing against the door.

Thanks Bruce. I just want to make sure Roger has his ducks in a row before shows up to WGI and is surprised by something.

Edit: I realize the belts should be gotten, I'm just trying to get this guy hooked on this activity.... I'm sure he'd get the proper gear once he's had a few days under his....belt....no pun intended. :)

One of my learnings in the TR^ - The seats (stock) and the belts (3-point) don't give me enough support. My lower left and right lateral back muscles were SCREAMING on Monday morning, form tensing to hold me in place.

Lesson learned - we're urgently going to solve the restraint install problem.

Bungee cords from your neck to each door handle.

Troy, I still have the harnesses from my old car; so if Roger decides he needs to add them; let me know. They are less than a year old.

I tried the bungee cords - my head flopped too much.

Next week, we'll test open Hunter-Jumper harness...
