Fuel Pump installation

I have to run the fuel from the cell to the injectors. The lines have to originate from the top of the cell in the rear of the passenger compartment. It's a second generation RX-7 with the exhaust running the length of the passenger side. I have some general instructions about keeping the pump lower than the lowest point on the fuel cell. Any other tips on things to avoid or remember would be appreciated if you have done this. It's all too expensive to do by trial and error (not to mention that I have a fear of large flames).

Shawn, unless you are running dual pumps with dual pickups- you need to think about building a box in the center of the cell that the pickup tube will go into. I'm still working on the fuel system for the black Mustang. Up until now I can't run with less than 50% in the cell or I start sucking air.

Also you need to be careful with sucking fuel out of a cell or tank with a fuel injected car- ideally the fuel is "pushed" out by an internal pump. I talked at length with the guys at Aeromotive and we settled on a check valve in line and of course you'll need an adjustable fuel pressure regulator at the other end of the line. I have my pump mounted even with the bottom of the cell. That seems to be working for me so far.

I'm not sure if you are thinking about running the fuel lines in the passenger compartment- maybe I just misinterpreted that- but that would not be cool even with braided line. Send the lines up the opposite side of the car from the exhaust.

Hey Shawn,

You could change it over to a carb, and use a single line with the fuel cell with a low pressure pump.

In my Lotary 7 I found by trial and error that it was necessary to use a box in the middle of the foam with one way flap valves for the pump inlet or else I would need 1/2 tank to avoid starvation in Turn 3. I forget who makes the box.

I'll have to try again during the daylight. There wasn't enough light tonight. It's an ATL Sportcell.

This cell has 2 pickups in bottom back corner of each side. Is that still going to be a problem?

Yes with only 1 pump- it will suck air from the pickup on the side of the cell toward the apex.

You can build the box Bruce refers to with some sheet metal- you really don't need flap doors- just some well placed small holes just above the lowest point of the pickup tube.

The box was about 6 inches square.
