Post by imgon » Sat Feb 21, 2009 8:53 pm

Are SFI rated harnesses dated 4/2007 OK to use this year?
Thanks

Thanks I thought so, but the new rules didn't mention carrying through the year. So when I replace them next year do I need to wait until springtime or is the month of manufacter not as important? Thanks again. See you soon.

In the case of new belts purchased and manufactured next year - 2010 - the month won't matter, they will be good through the end of the the 2nd year - 2012.
See you in 5 weeks?

Straight from the rule book, VI, F, 2

"All harness belts must have the SFI or FIA date certification label and be current (i.e. not expired or out of code). Generally, SFI belts are certified for 2 years and FIA belts are certified for 5 years. Certification date begins as of the date of manufacture, not the date of installation into the vehicle."

That would make 04/07 belts good to this April, correct?

It was explained to me, as I stated above, that we would allow those belts to remain legal until Dec 31, 2009. Any tech guys want to chime in here?

I'm not sure if that was our intent, but that is what the SCCA does, it would make sense to be consistent with them.

The 3-point belt for the TR6 does not have an SFI rating on it. I purchased these new from MOSS last year, and they have the following manufacturer's label:

SEAT BELT FOR AUTOMOBILE MEETS MVSS #209, #302

MFD DATE 2008 04 LOT NO 16

TAKATA KOREA CO LTD
ACCEPTABLE FOR INSTALLATION IN A VEHICLE WITHOUT AIRBAG

If I need to look for an alternative, let me know ASAP so I can be compliant for 4/5.

Thanks!

Jeff,

Are you in a street based class? I believe until you get to prepared you can use stock belts, lap belt/shoulder strap. It looks like once you get into the prepared class you need a 5 point harness system. I started with just the stock belts and the harnesses are WAAAAY better. They keep you attached to the seat so you don't have to hang on to something to keep from sliding around when playing in the corners. If you aren't thinking about slipping around in the seat you can keep your concentration on driving the line, shifting, etc. and having fun. Just my 2 cents, but if you have the time and money right now, order your self a pair of 5 point harnesses, passenger side has to have the same level of protection as the driver for the instructor. I got a set of G-Force from Saferacer.com and they are fairly reasonably priced. Good luck, get ready to have a good time. I too had some track experience on bikes and cars are much less stressful.

Thanks for the feedback! The TR6 would need major cab modification to take the 5-point. I'm starting to figure out how to do it - probably putting a steel plate on top of the seat mounting points, bolting a new seat to the plate, then bolting the 5-point to that. The intent is to maintain the integrity of the car - to be able to remove the mods without having damaged the car.

There's a great fab shop in Hooksett, Macy Steel, who is pretty experienced at restoring and modifying classic cars to hot-rods, as well as making GE aircraft engine parts. They seem to understand keeping the 1972 integrity.

Ummm, I don't see DOT approval on those belts.
