World of Wheels Car Show

Post by grovefromnh » Sat Jan 10, 2009 8:31 am

This weekend in Boston. Not exactly COM type cars, but the craftmanship is amazing. Nice car related event for mid winter.

COM used to display cars at that show in an effort to recruit new members. I think people had fun doing it.

We did, but whoever took over Publicity after Don Pierce, deceided that it was too much work. We could all e-mail our friends and other web sites and tell them all about COM. That didn't work!! The show was a chance to get together with other car people and introduce them to COM, as our booth cars had both racing numbers on their sides and liscense plates. The in car videos that were shown also got a lot of attention. It was great to here someone in the crowd watching say " Hey, those cars have plates on them. Can I do this with my Mustang/ whatever. Maybe next year.

Actually, one of those booths with the in-car-camera display showing is what got me go to COM. I always wondered why they didn't do it anymore. I also notice that the track dates aren't listed in Grassroots Motorsports anymore either. Their can't have been a charge associated with that.

It is nice to hear from those supporting the WOW participation. Hopefully those folks and other, will step up when the time comes.

We looked at WoW and discussed it at the October board meeting. The booth cost was expensive when I spoke to the organizers, but I believe they have a special rate for clubs. I followed up with a voice mail to the gentleman in charge of club booths, but did not hear back. This was two days before the Oct meeting. At the meeting, "those that have been around for a while", commented that there was never any substantial return on the investment, or as at least none that has been observed.

The final nail in the coffin for this year was WoW's conflict with our banquet date.

I never received a return call from WoW and didn't bother to follow up after we decided not to attend.

I remember going to the show for several years and seeing Grove, Don, Brian, and others there. Honestly, stopping by the COM booth was the only reason I went. I enjoyed walking around the show, but the draw to attend was the COM booth.

Grove is a fountain of great ideas.

I'm sure throwing them out in the forum isn't very satisfying though. Perhaps if we begged a little, he'd volunteer to help implement them.

I am not sure what the budget is marketing/pub., if any. How does the cost of a full/half page ad in sportscar or grassroots ($100 - $6K per issue) vs a wow booth? Nice range, ugh? I am sure the "grand master lodge" has evaluated the cost-benefit analysis of advertising in mags.

Anyone a subscriber of GRMS? (duh! just not me) Could you post on:
