TV: Plasma vs LCD versus DLP

Post by enjoythemusic » Mon Mar 24, 2008 8:59 am

Continuation from viewtopic.php?t=1578

The new LCDs have a claimed 4ms reaction and 30,000:1 contract ratio. Agree the 8ms LCD were not great for fast action, yet was shopping this weekend and the Samsung new series 550 models looked impressive. Never been a fan of plasma for some reson and DLP with 120 at least seems to remove the rainbow effects.

Maybe it is just me?

LCD: if you have your tv in a room with floor to ceiling full wall windows, this is the best thing for glare reduction (description of where my LCD TV is)
Plasma: Takes gobs of power, is fast, starts fading the moment you turn it on and eventually loses its picture completely. Also far heavier than LCD.
CRT: Yah, they still exist. Lightning fast, cheap, work well....although they have the glare of a plasma. A 37" weighs 275 pounds (I had one).
DLP: Fast and constantly improving. Buy one....it helps my profit sharing check in February. :D

Dont mean to insult anyone, but only a moron would pay 2-3K for a plasma screen or similar. Anyone who knows home A/V knows to buy a projector! Its so much better! Check out the JVC RS1U - is about 3K. If you need more lumens, keep looking, but this projector is amazing. We have one at work.

I have a 6 year old 55" projection TV that seems just as clear as all these new TV's I have seen in stores, and I paid about $500 bucks for it, new.

I guess I just don't look at TV that closely

I work with TVs all day...my company is in the top 3 of big screens sold on eBay, blah blah blah, JackFFR1846 nailed it.

One other fun thing to deal with on Plasmas is the burn...it takes no time at all on CNN or ESPN with their sidebars to burn that screen in (I'm talking 30 minutes). If you go plasma, be sure to get a disc from Pixel protector.

That said, I do like some of the new plasmas, but having two kids below 4 years old is a sure sign of no plasma in my house. I can imagine a dvd player left on the menu screen or the GUIDE left up for an hour or two while we're all outside playing LOL....then again, little hands and an LCD scares me too...some of the Sony Bravia Screens are fairly stout, but many would be nuked in no time...Sad because that means we'll be sticking with our 26" CRT for a few more years LOL!
