Just curious, given the choice, if COM hosted an event at one of these three "away" tracks, would you attend? Please vote below, and indicate why, why not, or an alternate "away track".

We've been there twice, and many times to Summit's main track.
At Summit Point, West Virginia
Approx 8.5 hours from Boston.

Virginia International Raceway
COM has never hosted an event at VIR
On the boarder of Virginia & South Carolina.
Approx 12 hours from Boston.

Mid-Ohio
COM has never hosted an event at Mid-Ohio
Located in the middle of Ohio ;)
Approx 11.5 hours from Boston

MidOhio, VIR!!!

Only reason I would list MidOhio ahead of VIR is because Ive been to VIR, other wise it'd be a toss up. That said, I think Id go to both if COM were to host.

Even if COM does not, Id be looking to tag along with another club that has agreeable dates in the fall (or spring at VIR..). I think in the past its been easier to find other club dates at VIR than MO, but I think that had more to do with the runoffs when they were at MO.

I haven't been to either Mid-Ohio or VIR, so I don't know sh!t. But from watching videos online VIR looks a lot more interesting. So VIR would get my vote.

Mid-Ohio because the SCCA Runoffs aren't there anymore and I'm not likely to run there otherwise.

VIR would be interesting, but a long tow.

Shenandoah only if it was included with a Summit Point main track event.

VIR is awesome, so is Mid-Ohio.

VIR has two configurations, one good (~3 mi) the other great (4+ mi). VIR is considerably faster than Calabogie and more forgiving than WGI. It has good facilities (bathrooms, fuel, scales drivers supply store) but lacks [public] garages.

Mid-Ohio is imo a better track for a DE or TT event. The track is not as long as VIR so pulling cars and rotating run groups is not as time consuming. The speeds/transitions at Mid-Ohio are not as breath-taking as VIR, easier on both instructors and students. Mid-Ohio does have a few limited run-off areas but is very forgiving when compared to LRP, Mosport, WGI, or even Tremblant. I expect Mid-Ohio is considerably more $ than VIR unless something has change. Also, Mid-Ohio can be 1-2 hours less in travel time due to the interstate route.

I'd vote for Summit Point Raceway (main track) over either VIR or M-O. Bill Scott is a racer's racer and SPR is a great TT and DE track (especially w/ the repaving). If COMSCC could get 3-days again (1-2 days at Shenandoah, the other day(s) on the main track), that would be ideal. I would trade a weekend at LRP for SPR. I know SPR has had mixed turnout but I think it can be a good track for COMSCC. Just my $.02

Re VIR, this is assuming that we can run the full course. Anything shy of that, I dont think I would go. If we could ever run the Grand course that would be the titts!!

I have races at both Mid Ohio and VIR. Great tracks but a two day tow each way.
I think we ought to go to Thunderbolt in NJ. SCCA has scheduled races there. We might actually get more than ten people to go to this great track. Easy tow.

I did, however pick VIR from the choices given and I think Mid Ohio would be my 2nd choice.

Sadly, never been to any of them so can not comment but WILL say if COMSCC can time to long haul events VERY near each other time-wise, or perhaps time the same track event close to the same time as an SCCA event.

Sorry for sounding selfish, yet guys like me hate long hauls to come home and long haul near the same area only 10 days later. This is probably why i will make only one of the two Canada COMSCC dates. While i am sure not everyone can make their own schedule as i can, which means quite frankly i never need to be home per se, there is still work to be done and some semblance of a personal life to account for. So until i choose to purchase a motorhome with satellite Internet and bring wife with me to track events this is my stance.

Fwiw, consider an "open track" event for experienced/licensed drivers (including SCCA, BMW, PCA, NASA, EMRA) for a track that is (A) far away and not necessarily an annual event (B) new to COMSCC and (C) not expected to attract many novice drivers.

I do not know the proportion of active members that are licensed vs not licensed but I imagine it is very high. An open track format (w/ run groups) would provide huge amounts of track time as well as attract members from other clubs. The time trial could be dropped, but that may be an attraction COMSCC has over other clubs. I think attendance would skyrocket (relatively) and the financials would be better since all participants (i.e., freeloading instructors) would be paying to play as well.

I know that this may sound heretical, but given the changing landscape of clubs and tracks in new england (i.e., more clubs, fewer dates, higher rates) I think COMSCC needs to explore every angle to keep dates and cater to its members (and potential members), and remain viable.

I would hosestly say that if either VIR or Mid Ohio was on the schedule, I would attend neither. It is too far to travel for me. My brother drove from Boston to Greenboro SC (about 40 min from VIR) and it took him 12 hours in a car. Add another couple of hours in tow, and it adds up to a serious haul. Mid Ohio is even more miles and central PA can be pretty hilly drive. I would definetly concider a trip to NJ if it was in the summer.

I agree, I am not really interested in a 12-14 hour tow. If we can't get members to go to the away tracks now because they are too far, we will surely have low attendence.

What ever happened to the idea of piggy-backing with other clubs to make away events more viable. I don't remember the details, but I think we used to do this with EMRA at Pocono, and some other club at Lime Rock.

What about Pocono, or BeaveRun? both good tracks, and at Pocono there are 3 configurations...

I go to mid-ohio a lot, long haul but well worth it.. track is GREAT!
