Another boost question

Post by John F » Thu Dec 06, 2007 3:28 pm

The street prepared rules say in item 12 that turbo or supercharged cars will be moved up to the next class level. My SPA cobra has a supercharger. Since SPA is the top of the street prepared group, does this move me to Prepared?

Nope. SPA is pretty much any car with more than 6 cylinders (either F/I or N/A), and any 5-6 cylinder car with forced induction.

F/I = forced induction (e.g.: turbo, supercharger)
N/A = Naturally Aspirated (no turbo or supercharger)

That's the way I read it and I hoped it was right. Thanks

I believe we just removed that vestigial rule about turbos moving up a class. So fee free to put the turbo offfie indy engine in your Miata and run in SPB. Or a 14 liter radial 16 aircraft engine with 30 PSI of supercharger in the Miata and run in SPA. Just don't use Nitromethane. Or alcohol.

Sweet. So now I can install my turbo and still run in SPA. I will just have to put in 3/8" thick head gaskets to reduce my compression ratio a bit first! I will probably need dually wheels in the back to keep the wheels from spinning.

And maybe an explosion blanket around the whole damned motor?

The turbo Offie would be a legal SPB swap for a Miata, unfortunately, Mazda never offered a 16 cylinder engine in a Miata so that mod would put it into Prepared.

You are right--- unless you cut a few frame pieces and call it a kit car.

Joel, you could have added three turbos and still be in SPA. And it seems to me that you were having just as much trouble keeping the front tires stuck to the pavement- those 2 skid marks just over the tree house hump were pretty impressive and expensive.

Yeah...I know. It is because I was running the Carbotech XP 12 pads up front for the first time, and those suckers are a little touchy!! Very difficult to keep them from locking. There is a very fine line with those pads.

I may just go back down to the XP8's or 10's for next season......or I could try to hook up my ABS again. It might not be a bad option as it could help to save $650 worth of tires in a one millisecond mistake!

I haven't really been following this closely. A 6 cylinder car with a turbo will still be moved up to SPA, correct?

A SPB 6 cyl with a turbo would be SPA.

Please don't get me going on the ABS debate again! Don't dumb it down- figure out the problem, fix it and threshold brake.

For that on-track incident where you've completely lost it and the only option is to try to stop as fast as possible to avoid a collision- ABS is UNSAFE!

For the safety of those around you when you spin (I'm not yelling at you now Joel)- ABS is UNSAFE.

Sorry to hijack the "boost" thread. Blow on.....
