Become Instructor?

Post by Subw00er » Wed Oct 31, 2007 12:07 am

How does one become an instructor and whats required to do so?

Also, if someone becomes an instructor, are they then expected to instruct at every event they attend?

Talk with Carl. We're working on a way to do this in a more organized way than in the past but we don't have a "program" ala White Mountain BMW.

You're not expected to instruct any more than you volunteer to do. You still register on line just like you do now, which is how COM knows who is coming. I've only done one COM event this year so far because of my schedule.

If you're at LRP, come find me. I can help. #198 either a black Mazda 6 or the red CRX depending on the temperature.

Note I am not the authority, just trying to pass you feedback. Carl is the person you should contact.

There is a procedure. Need to complete a form, describe definition of line, etc. and take a driving course with (at least in my "testing) 2 instructors (Chief Instructor and another appointed by the Chief Instructor), you need "mileage", good talking skills, and approval. It's all based on need and approval by the Chief.
In my case Jeff McCarthy and Chris Tier were the ones who "drilled" me (yes, drilled) and made the approval.
I have been a COM member since 2000 and became instructor in 2004.
I tell you it's not for everyone. There are moments that can be very testy and draining (Some will remember Calabogie with 2 students, motion sickness at the end of the day). You are there riding shotgun and make sure the driver understand the principles and see if at the end of the day there is progress, consistency, learned something, ensured safety at all times and had fun.
Not trying to discourage you just trying to get you prepared for every outcome.
Bonne chance!

You must have super human driving skills, the smooth talking of Bill Clinton and the patience of Mother Theresa.
