Website updates
Website updates
Ok, this is getting ridiculous. What's going on with the webmaster here? How hard could it possibly be to maintain this website? What would it take, less than an hour to update the results pages? It's not a lot to ask of somebody.

Lets look at it this way. What if the chief instructor stopped doing his job? He'd be fired. What if the book keeper stopped doing his job? Fired. What about the webmaster?

Re: Website updates
Our webmaster sent out an S.O.S. back in the spring, and made it clear that he could not give the website the attention it deserves. I guess that nobody has stepped up to the task. If it isn't that hard, then why doesn't someone offer to take over the responsibility?

"Fired"

That word is customarily used in a work relationship that also implies payment for work performed.

Since COMSCC is a volunteer organization maybe there is a member that might be able to assist the Webmaster.
Any one want to VOLUNTEER?
Re: Website updates
If I am not mistaken, there were several volunteers but the offers were either not accepted of the handoff was not managed properly. In any case, the end result is the same. For what it is worth, this same discussion was held at a BOD meeting last year. In fact, at that time, someone had volunteered to post the results. The response was lackluster, reasons for not accepting the offer were discussed and nothing became of the situation. The reason for the late results updates was the software. The latest reason I have heard this year is the BOD must review the results before they can be posted.

I autoX with 4 clubs. The results are posted within 24 hours to up to 1 week. The job requires scoring from 50 up to as high as 150 cars, multiple classes, plus a handicap factor to allow the comparison of classes. Much more labor intensive that COM.

So much for the rant, see everyone on Sunday. Who know's, maybe they will have the Mosport trophies.

Re: Website updates
The results are not reviewed by the Board of Directors prior to being posted. The Club's Scorekeeper does the initial computations and the Chief of Timing & Scoring reviews these results.

The process is usually within 2 or 3 days after an event the Scorekeeper has completed formulating the event results and has compiled the year-to-date standings. These two documents are then immediately e-mailed to the Chief of Timing & Scoring, the Webmaster and the Drift Editor.
Re: Website updates
Hi Mark, yes I know you have the results within a day or two. This is the part that is frustrating, since they prepared should be posted within a reasonable time. I attended the BOD meeting last year when the software was blamed for the delay. This year while at Mt. Tremblant, I was told the delay was due to the BOD requirement to review the results due to track records. I was at a BOD meeting over a year ago, when an individual volunteered to post the results. I have spoken to an individual who volunteered within the last few months to work on the website, but there was confusion, lack of followup or some other factor which prevented the assistance from ever happening.

No one is blaming you Mark, you are doing a great job with registration, class records and other functions you handle. My only complaint is you are falling down on the "requested weather" portion of your job. NO RAIN on Sunday and Monday.

An earlier post mentioned the club is made up of volunteers. We have some very dedicated individuals in addition to Mark. Carl Fossum has done a super job this year as chief instructor and gone beyond the call of duty by running the events. He has solicited and recieved the help from others to make sure the events run smoothly. There lies the key to success, requesting help, and supporting the volunteers so everyone succeeds.

OK, Off to the races......

Re: Website updates
I have been involved with the club a few years now and feel it is a great organization.
Because of geographical location I have not been able to attend board meetings. So the internal operation of the club is foreign to me. I have been invloved as a member (volunteer) in other organizations. In some cases I have seen similar issues that cause organizations to split up, members to leave the organization. ( ie. start a new club) and let a lot of good work go to waste. I think it would be prudent to have a club meeting either at the NHIS diner or a time when a majority of the club members can get together to discuss the issues with the website, up date/time trials/point standings. I do feel that if we let people know what is invloved to keep the website updated, volunteers will be available. Again, this is a great organization and I hope that these issues can be resolved. Re: Website updates
We just need someone to take it over. Yes, I know of two people who expressed interest, but when it came time to assume responsibility, it didn't come easy, so they gave up before they even started. Its too bad, because I would also like to be able to refer to an updated website. Volunteers get worn out, and then it is time for someone else. So, whoever volunteers for website maintenance next, you may need to pull a little before you get it. I'd do it, but I'm a computer dope. Lee said it best, "off to the races"
Posting results
If it's just a matter of updating the results page (i.e., NOT redesigning the whole website using the latest cutting edge technology, personalization, popup ads, flashy thingies, bouncy thingies, neat little icons, sophisticated databases, etc.), I am more than willing to put the scores up after each event, as soon I can get paws on them by email, FedEx, courier pigeon.... Hell, I will even forgo my 1 hour naps under my desk after lunch at work to do it.

That is, if someone tells me the information I need to log in to the server and where the html files are kept. It cannot possibly be that hard.

If someone (Mark?) can give me the final results and points from Sept. NHIS, and I have access to the machine, I can get them up within a couple hours of receiving them.
website
I know the webmaster has asked repeatedly for some help updating things. Even if it's a simple update this html, without a complete redesign. Knowledge of html is all that's really needed, heck, you could do it on the server if you knew vi well enough.

I agree. I can even put up the scores from Mt. Tremblant while I'm at it. Sorry Lee, I can't manufacture trophies.
Gripes at dinner?
I agree that a gripe session at the Sunday night free dinner at the Red Jacket would be good. At this last week's BOD meeting (at the Ground Round in Chelmsford) a few questions came up that members might be polled at the same dinner.

Re: Gripes at dinner?
I also vote for Raj to do it, but if he's as slow on the updates as he is on the track, we might want to recruit a backup for him.

Tremblant and NHIS results are up. Season points have been updated as well.
Thanks to Herb, Mark and Dan for being patient with me. Next time, I will have fewer questions
