Dumb law. I expected the guy to have saved the vin tag and just reattached it when the cops gave him static.

Why would you remove the VIN tag on a vehicle,especially one you were restoring? It's not like it's in the way or anything. Kinda like filing off the serial number on a firearm: both are federal felony offenses...and usually the contraband is then destroyed.
