Trailer insurance

Post by offcamber09 » Tue Apr 05, 2016 11:21 am

Looking for some feedback on insuring an enclosed trailer while register it in Maine. I live in MA and registered my open trailer in Maine for the last few years, my insurance agent says I can't put fire/theft on it unless it's registered in MA. Do people just rely on their homeowners for coverage? Is it covered if it's stolen while hooked up to the insured tow vehicle?
Thanks, Scott

I have mine fully insured in ma. The insurance is cheap (but the registration was not).

I can sadly attest to the fact that the trailer WILL NOT be covered by your homeowners, hooked up or not. Home owners will (or did in my case) cover the contents of the trailer. The only thing about it being hooked up is that your truck liability covers you if your trailer smashes into someone else. I now insure my trailer as a camper.

trailers are covered by the tow vehicle in mass, even if registered in Maine.

I think this is true while you are towing but not while it is parked and unattached between events which is when a potential theft is most likely to occur.

Scott,

I have my racecar and trailer insured by Hagerty. They accept race cars, and cover mine all tge way to the moment the front wheels cross out of the paddock into hot pit.

Trailer is covered under all circumstances. I also am registered in ME and live out of that state.
