There must be a 1.8 liter Miata motor sitting around somewhere just getting in the way. If so, you should get that thing out of your way and replace it with some extra cash. No a lot of extra cash. I'm not looking for the latest in race technology, just a regular 1.8l stock Miata motor.
The car it's going in is a 97.

what i found to be the best way to go if your doing a swap and need all parts like motor , wiring , ecu , and a host of other things is to buy a salvage car . i will also buy them for jobs that a insurance writes a repair for some likle a hole nose on a car .
there are sites like carfrom.us that will sell to you and you don't have to have a repair or dealers license like many do . then because you bought the hole car you sell off every thing you don't need and then scrap the shell and also get paid for that from the scrap yard .
the last one i bought was a volvo S60R i paid 2300 dollars for it with shipping from NJ to ct . i needed the two right side door fender hood bumper cor support and some other odds and ends . the car was hit real hard in the ass so i sold off every thing else the motor and trans it's self paid me back for the cost of the car and shipping . then it was all free parts after that . the insurance job i bought the car for all those parts were free and i also sold off the seats the left fender and front door . than i called the bone yard and they gave me 150 dolars for the rest of the car and picked it up .
i just looked and there is a blue 1999 NB in MA and no bids placed on it . many times you will also buy a car that you are the only person to place a bid on the car . that's the case alot with cars like miata's as there are so many of them some years ago i bought a NC miata for the motor i paid 800 dollars for the car i was the only one to place a bid on the car then i sold the rest of the car with out the motor for 1000 dollars .

Thanks for the suggestions guys.
I have checked in to the usual sources. The $300 engine guy does not respond and the $1600 is more than I'm willing to pay for a used Miata motor.
My budget for this is about $500 so it may take a while, but one will show up eventually.

Have you tried expolineauto.com in Derry? Probably more than $500 but low miles and you can probably hear it run before purchase.

i know you were saying you only lookinh to spend 500 bucks .
smith auto recycling in clinton MA has a motor with 92K on it for 750 dollars . that is a list price if you know a repair shop owner they will get some off that price most of the time it's 15% off so then your only looking at 630 dollars or so . that's not to much over budget for a tested good low miles motor and bone yards also give a 30 day warranty .
another option for you is to buy a hole salvage car i have done this 100's of times for parts .
you will pay the 1600 dollars or so up fromt but by the time you sell off all the good parts you will end up with some thing like the motor for free or even make money along with the free motor .
like i said i have done this many times before the last job was a volvo S60R i needed a nose and right door for . the insurance co paid for used parts for the car the cost they had was about 4500 dollars . i bought a salvage car hit in the ass for 2200 dollars shipped to my shops door . with my time removing the parts i still made 1000 plus dollars . then i sold the motor , trans , seats , front suspension , wheels and many other little things from the car . i ended up making over 3500 dollars on the car in selling the parts then the scrap yard gave me another 150 dollars for the cars body . if there wasn't money to be made in salvage cars bone yards would not be in business .
even if you don't have a repair or dealers license there are still sites to buy salvage cars for like carfrom.us
some times you have to spend money to make money .
