After reading this post from Mick: 1st gen M3's (e30 1988-1991) were only available with a 4 cylinder.
I am assuming this seller is wrong about them being E30's as both appear to be 6 cylinders?

Sam,they are on Ebay. Both cars for an opening bid of $12.5k. What a deal. Too bad they're in Texas. Could always ship them for another $3k./pr
Maybe someone put the later model E36 engines in these? Or..maybe they are E36 chassis?I really don't know enough about them to tell.

The e30 M3 was a four cyl, whereas a plain jane e30 could be a six. His ad doesn't claim that they are M3s, does it?

Ahhh..there is the key. They are not M3's. He only calls them E30 race cars,not M3's.

Right.
E30, E36, E46... = Platform
318, 325, 328, M3... = Model
The model number is usually the series + displacement
318 = 3 series with a 1.8L
530 = 5 series with a 3.0L

Although they have taken plenty of liberties with the numbers for various reasons. Some E46 323's are actually 2.5L and newer 328's and 330's share the same displacement. Marketing.....saying 323 to a Bimmerphile is like saying 1750 to an Alfisti.
But yah.....a real M3 is very different from a plain Jane E30 car.

I don't see much difference, other than the body kit.
