Unless more "local" tracks are found, the club becomes home only to the elite with $$.
"Elite??" In case anyone hasn't noticed, what we do is expensive. It costs $$ to run your car around the track whether it's NHIS, Mosport, or a local go-kart track. Speaking for myself, two or three track weekends a year is all I can afford anyway. I guess that makes me an "average stiff."

For me, all the tracks that COM visits (except for Summit Point) are between a three and seven hour drive away. Personally, given the total cost of a track weekend, plus the time taken off work, an extra four hours on Friday afternoon and Sunday night is not going to be the deciding factor. Mosport is a spectacular venue, and I can't wait to go back there. I guess that makes me an "elite" average stiff.

This talk about longer drives being only for a rich, elite few really burns me up, because that sure as $%# isn't me.

OK, let me try again! You missed the point, but clearly covered it in your reply.
I also will make 2 or 3 "away" trips this year, but if more and more events become "away " events, less of guys like you and I will be able to attend, correct?
I know that local tracks are few and far between. I know that NHIS is a real car beater, and I know how much fun Tremblant and Mosport are. But, the away tracks do limit (Hey, we beg for signups) the number of attendees, so I do not see how adding more away events will be an advantage to us average stiffs. Hopefully you see where I am coming from, if not, ce la vie.

Sam, I get your point. Mosport hammered me on gas money, with all that open track and a 5mpg car. The away events definitely cost $200-300 more than NHIS or LRP. However, I think the quality of the tracks makes it worthwhile.

That being said, I don't think COM will stray very far from the current mix they have - 4 or 5 locals and 3 or 4 aways.

I hope not. I don't need yet another fellow to beat me :D You'll probably wind up in SSGT/ST1 with it.

Yeah, I see your point. Sorry, I didn't mean to come across as hot under the collar as I maybe did.

I recognize that the club needs to have enough attendance at events to keep itself in business. I admit to being reluctant myself to make the drive to Mosport last year until the club begged for more people. Having made the trip once, though, I will absolutely make it again, and be smiling the whole seven hours there. Then again, my extra expenses were nowhere near Raj's $200-300. Must be a Miata thing. :P

We 'elitist' have even greater expenses once you factor in tow costs. 11mpg & diesel fuel make for expensive refills. Despite that, I try to go to every 'away' (because every event is an away event for me) track day I can. I'd go to Calabogie if it wasn't in between Summit & NHIS.

I appreciate the time off issue, I know if I didn't have all the vacation time I needed, I'd have to limit my involvement. It's the tire/fuel/brake/broken parts expenses that are my limiting issues.

Signed up and paid before i even picked up the new car.

I bought Suresh's silver STi last week.

Nothing like getting a rollbar, 3 sets of tires, 2 sets of BBS wheels, and coilovers with a car. These should be dealer options!!

Looking forward to running Calabogie. Needless to say i'll be driving VERY carefully in the new STi. The track looks absolutely stunning. $250 canadian is a freakin steal for 2 days.

I'm not quite sure. Clare, Paddy and I are staying at a place run by some dude named "Jocko". I'll let Clare spill the details since she did the booking.

We worked all weekend on the Indycar and I have an alignment setup on it's way from Indy to get it's base alignment. Right now I am looking at a 65 percent probablility of it being ready, I may be crazy driving 8 hours for it's virgin time on the track but 10 months and $70K later you can imagine how anxious I am to try it out.

From an email that Paddy sent me (he basically wrote down all I had to say):
----------------
Calabogie was awesome! The track was amazing. Brand spanking new
pavement, curbs, paddock, heck, even the tire walls were all brand new
bridgestones (seriously)! The track is really challenging. It would
have been a crash fest if they just let everyone run 100% in the
morning. Everything is super late apex and some corners are very
deceptive/blind. At first my thoughts were that it was a tight
technical slow track - but it's not. Raj and i must have hit 125mph
into turn 5. With practice - that number can only go up.

There was no one there who knew the track. Everyone was new to the
track, even the instructors. No one could say do this here, brake
here, lift here. I always catch myself asking everyone a ton of
questions about the tracks we go to. I love talking about where you
brake, where he turns in, etc so i can go faster. There was only 1
person who really seemed to be getting the hang of things and that was
a guy named Ron with a Porsche GT3. Raj and i attacked him with
questions before our very last session and we went right out and
changed almost everything about our line. This guy pulled away from
us like we were standing still. We pointed him by and he was frickin
GONE. Experience is going to go all long way here. It's not about
the car's performance at calabogie. The fast miata guys will love
this place i think.

The track opened on Sept 27th 2006. 3 weeks before we got there. It
had a projected opening date of sometime in 2002! Needless to say the
owners and workers had sooo much anticipation for the opening. The
sense of excitement was really incredible.

The track owners, the car club president, and other participants were
blown away that raj clare and I came all the way from MA to drive the
track. They got excited by the fact that we drove 8+ hours to
experience something they put together. It was an awesome experience.
They truly wanted to see us have a great time at Calabogie.

The cars were great - not a peep out of either STi.

There was a bit of frustration over the amount of track time. We got
very little track time over the 2 days. half the track time was
behind a pace car at 75% the other 25% was fantastic although in
heavy traffic. The drivers meeting on sat was over at 10:45am! the
first cars were on track at 11:20am! ahhh so frustrating!

<some personal stuff snipped>

I can't wait to go with COM next year. Calabogie is up there with
Mosport and Tremblant.
-----------------

Thanks for saying it for me, Paddy :) If COM doesn't go there next year, I'm running with some other club there.

One thing I want to add - there were no real facilities. However, by next year, they are expecting to have a real control tower (instead of the shack), real bathrooms (instead of porta-potties), and real male strippers (instead of Paddy).
