I've been preaching the seat belt scam for years- SFI is funded by the equipment manufacturers. I would much rather be hunkered down by a 10 year old set of racing belts than a factory 3 point belt- which, more often than not, is more than 10 years old.boltonite wrote:Fwiw, some racers believe SFI is a scam. The SCCA has just emailed all racers that Impact will NOT be treated as decertified and their SFI labels will be recognized at tech. We should take the same approach.

They seem to be skirting what happened in 2008. I have a brand new 5 point harness from them. I'm going to be moving to Sabelt for everything here-fourth. I've just had enough with this company.

General Rules Bulletin: 2010 –#1 – April 2nd The following rule amendment(s) is in regard to ALL sanctioned World Racing Group Divisions, including, but not limited to; World of Outlaw Sprint Car Series, World of Outlaw Late Model Series, Super DIRTcar Series, DIRTcar, UMP DIRTcar;
3.0 Personal Safety Equipment – ALL CARS, ALL DIVISIONS
C.) Per an agreement with the SFI Foundation and only in regard directly to Impact Racing Product(s) equipment and/or protective clothing (gloves, driving suits, seat belts, helmets, etc…) with a dated and stamped SFI tag from 2009 and/or 2010 will be permitted for competition. Any equipment and/or protective clothing with a date stamped SFI tag from any other year will not be permitted. Note: The SFI Foundation, which determines the safety standards and certifies equipment such as Protective Clothing, helmets, seat belts, gloves, head and neck restraints, etc…, for its member sanctioning bodies, including World Racing Group has announced the following agreement with Impact Racing and Safety Equipment, which outlines the permissible 2009 and 2010 SFI stamped, dated and tagged items. The SFI Foundation has announced that any Impact Racing and Safety Equipment, with SFI dated and stamped tags carrying any other date other than 2009 or 2010 will be decertified on April 27th, 2010.

and 2008. The decertifications of these products are now permanent.
2. The decertifications are based upon a number of the affected products being noncompliant
with SFI specifications concerning labeling and construction. In addition to the
presence of non-compliant SFI tags and the absence of DOMs on products, 3.2A/5 suits made
prior to 2009 have been constructed with non-compliant materials that, in SFI’s judgment, pose a
safety risk to users of these suits.
3. Impact Racing is permitted to maintain the certification for products bearing SFI
3.2A, 3.3, 16.1, and 16.5 specifications manufactured in 2009 and 2010. SFI’s investigation of
the labeling and construction of these products is ongoing. Impact’s participation in the SFI
specification programs ends June 22, 2010.
4. Any Impact product with SFI specifications 3.2A, 3.3, 16.1, and 16.5 without a
date of manufacture (DOM) is deemed to be a decertified product unless the manufacturer has
provided the product user with proof that it was manufactured in 2009 or 2010. This proof must
be presented to track officials upon request. Impact believes that its products made in 2009 and
2010 have the DOMs affixed to products to the extent mandated by SFI specifications."

For what it's worth, driversupply has stopped carrying Impact products. I suspect this will turn out to be an industry trend. Whatever the outcome of this specific squabble, the reputation of the safety products we sell can't be a compromise.
This isn't the first time that a company has gone wrong by being penny-wise and pound-foolish, and unfortunately it probably won't be the last.
