That is not the case, at least not with my older-model camera. The bacpak is the only thing that needs to be on "at all times" for the remote to operate the camera. The remote has complete control over every function of the camera, including turning it on and off, as long as the bacpak is on. I've turned off the camera with the remote, then turned it back on a half hour later.
I extensively tested the camera & remote during my trailer wind-tunnel testing. I've tested the wifi remote at 30-40' distances while traveling at highway speeds!
Maybe it should be called "trailer park" wind tunnel testing.

I use Kodak Zi8. Kodak also makes some other similar inexpensive HD cameras. Big plus for me was that it has external mike input, something I needed to hear the engine in a Miata instead of wind noise.

Using the ReplayXD-1080 Camera; http://replayxd.com/cameras/replay-xd1080-camera/ So far so good. Really like the form factor, very rugged. Currently mounted to bottom of rear view mirror.
They have an awesome remote designed for in-car setups; http://replayxd.com/product/xd1080-hard ... p-4-meter/ It allows hardwired power and remote control with indicator LED.
Test video here; COMSSCC @ NHMS-5-29-12 - 2nd RG3 Session.
-2011 Mustang GT on street tires
-ReplayXD camera set on 720P on rear view mirror mount
-Motorola ATRIX cellphone running Trackmaster datalogging app.
-Dashware post-editing software.
Couple problems with this video while learning to use Dashware; Gplot was off by 90 degrees and telemetry doesn't start until after the warmup lap when I cross the stripe. I have this sorted now.
