I hear ya. My "old" truck is 10 years old now, looking underneath you'd swear it is 20. Brake hoses blew out at 7, brake lines at 10. The control arm bushings are toast and the arm itself is a rusty mess. Transmission pan was replaced at, shift linkage, brake calipers twice, rotors twice ... the poor truck only has 60k miles!

A friend of mine is a metallurgist, and he tells me the amount of nickel they are putting in todays auto steel is 50% less than it use to be,due to mainly the costs involved. The steel looks the same,and is almost as strong,but its ability to resist rust is very much reduced. Out of sight,out of mind...
