Re: chevy people question
Depends .For track duty, you really don't want to take it much over 6.5k, assuming it's a regular GM truck lower end. SBC's can be built to spin till they explode,so the bottom end is the limiting factor in that respect.
It's not what you drive, it's how you drive. "Lap times matter"
Re: chevy people question
If it is a cast crank, cast piston, stock rod, flat tappet cam hydraulic cam, I would say the safe max limit would be about 6000.

Re: chevy people question
why i was asking is the tack . i have a VDO tack that does 4 6 and 8 cylinders but max RPM on the tack is 7k . on the hot rod fourms what people are saying with what the motor has in it no more that 6600 rpm . some advice tells me to set the tack at 6000 rpm and just move it up real slow to see were the red line will be . it has roller rockers . so i'm told the max rpm should be about 6300 . thats about what i was thinking (about 6400 ) .
Re: chevy people question
If you don't have the cam card, aftermarket cams have their ID numbers stamped on the front of the cam. If you remove the top timing gear you can see it and look up the specs. Other than that, you are guessing at the power band range. You should also put a road race pan on if all possible and Canton is a good choice, the company is in Branford and I am pretty sure they have a retail counter there too. If you have a stock bottom end, 6300-6400 should be ok for things like drag racing, or a tracks like NHMS, where you are not on the throttle for long periods of time. Tracks like WGI, I would not run a sustained RPM above 5500-5800, those bottom ends are not built to take a lot of punishment.

Re: chevy people question
how thats the motor is all back together and painted you tell me were to look for what cam i have . when i had the timing cover off i did see it has a gear drive system . i thought that was stock and just found out a week ago its not . i think there is a hotter cam in the motor becouse it idles a little loppy at 900 rpm . but not like an air leak loppy . yep canton is about a mile away from my house . there realy in north branford . i was talking with dick moroso about using one of there oil pans . moroso is the next town over in guilford . i have to cut the oil pan to clear the x-member . i was hoping i could use a moroso dry sump but there 3.75 deep and i can't go more than 3 1/2 deep to clear the x-member . but i'm watting on the pan becouse i'm still don't have the one piece C5 bellhousing that was ordered 3 weeks ago . any way i think if i set the tack at 5900 to start with i should be ok ??
Re: chevy people question
I have a extra moroso style dry sump pan that I picked up at a swap meet. It was in an explosion in the past but someone did a masterful brazing repair on it. It is clean and fits perfect on a block, still it a good usable part. I did not pay much for so if you can use, it is yours. Another thing to note, in order to run dry sump, you need convert to the short style water pump. The Thompson swap meet is comming up in a few weeks (Nov 6 - 7) and it is a great place you pick up dry sump stuff. You can save a bundle on things like hose ends and fittings, tank, drive parts, pulleys, drysump pump (they are easy to service), power steering pump, etc. Make sure you get a good balancer for the engine too, I've used the same Fluidampr for decades now.

Re: chevy people question
thanks for the offer . i have a right side dip stick allot of the pans i have found they are for the left side of the motors . i seam to be that it was only 80 to 1985 for the dip to be on the right side ? is this try ?? i think i'm goimg to the thompson swap meet . i just missed the one at staford speedway .
Re: chevy people question
I believe your correct that 80-85 are the only 2 piece seal blocks that have right side dipsticks, but you are going dry sump it does not matter because the oil pan does not maintain an oil level. If you are going wet sump, the right side pans are harder to find. You have be careful because the 1 piece seal blocks also have the right dipsticks but these won't work. Stafford usually does not have an abundance of racing parts, and the racing parts they have is most drag stuff. Thompson is virtually all racing parts, and the majority of engine parts are small block chevy.
