Miata ST-class Seats

Dave G had a good setup and swaps the seat in/out when events come up. If you drive it on the street alot that is what I would do. I'd also suggest you mount it like he did (to the floor) for maximum clearance, but do two sets of holes so you can move it for both you and your wife. It's only 4 bolts. Dave has pictures of the install, maybe he'll share!

I like Paul's idea of two sets of holes. That's pretty much the only way I can think of to get the seat low enough for you. If you mount it on the sliders, I can pretty much guarantee that your head would be way over the roll bar. There's lots and lots of talk on miata.net about this exact topic. Many people have faced it before you. The only way that tall people (or even medium-sized people) can get below the roll bar in a Miata is to lower the seat and/or tip the seat angle back. I had trouble with this and I'm not even tall.

Dave,are the braces necessary on the aluminum seats? I noticed in one of your pictures you have the seat back braced:

I've seen stock seats modified this way (I have a pair actually); and I have seen folks cut a big square on the head rest area (where the speakers go) to allow for shoulder harness straps (it wasn't pretty, but it works).

Yes. Unlike composite seats, aluminum racing seats should always be supported with a back brace.

Dave, what does your seat back brace tie into? I can't see in the picture if it is to an area of the roll bar; or the miata metal behind the seat area, the roll bar blocks the view?

It clamps to the harness bar. BTW, I have both an Autopower and an IO Port seat brace for my two seats. They're both good, but I prefer the Autopower brace. It's steel instead of aluminum, and the hardware is a little easier to work with. YMMV

kirkey economy seats 123 bucks from kirkey with head suports avalible for another 30 bucks each side then a cushined cover for 60 bucks or a intermidate road race seat for 250 and 150 for the cushined seat cover the diffrence between the 2 seats is that the intermidate has shoulder supports and the economy has only rib supports

If you want a good deal on an aluminum seat, wait for the Thompson Speedway swap meet Nov 7-8. Exit 99 on 395, first CT exit. The place is littered with seats. I got a Kirky 17" intermediate a couple years ago for $60.

if u go to any nascar weekley series tracks and u use a "racing seat" the back has to be braced and most of the tracks u cant get mutch above 70 mph so personaly i would have to say if u were to use a aluminum seat ide have a brace on the back side so it cant get crushed in a crash and not have it mounted to the floor but to the roll cage so if the cage gets moved u move with it and dont get hit by the cage in a crash
