I owned a Dauphine for about an hour and a half. I could flex the frame up and down by pushing hard on the steering wheel. This was in my youth when the environment was not a great concern, so I pushed it down an embankment into the woods.

I've never actually seen a Dauphine, so I looked it up. In the Wikipedia entry is this little tidbit:
The Dauphine was originally intended to be called the Corvette, but was changed to Dauphine...to avoid confusion with the recently-launched Chevrolet Corvette.
Kinda gives a whole new perspective on what "COM" could have been.

But they were faster than the competion back then: Citreon 2CV, 435cc (2CV stood for duex chevaux vapeur as in 2 steam horspower - drunken horse power most likely). My brother-in-law at the time (mid 1960's) had a 2CV and I had the dubious pleasure of riding in it from Stuttgart, Germany to Paris, France. I often made that trip in under 4 1/2 hours in my BMW 2002, that trip took us 10 1/2 hours, for the 375 miles! Saw lots of Renault Dauphines on that trip, as they passed us! There was a Gordini version of the Dauphine that pumped 36 hp through the 845cc motor and topped out over 80 mph ( :!: ), and was under 30 seconds 0-60. I am sure the Dauphine could make the trip in, oh, maybe, 7 hours?
The good old days, things were simpler and, obviously, life moved at a slower pace :D
